Dirty Passport is a smoked lager based on an Alsatian beer named Adelscott. The base is somewhat similar to a German dunkel, but stronger. It uses peat smoked malt, likening the aroma to scotch, and also some cherry wood smoked malt to balance the profile. The yeast strain chosen for the Dirty Passport emphasizes a smooth, soft finish, making it a perfect whiskey back.

Growler from the brewery.
A clear deep mahogany red with a dense, off-white head with good retention and mild lacing, this looks solid. The nose is delicately yet robustly smoky, a blend of earth, toasted butterscotch, a moderate peat note, this really does have layers of smoke notes. Firmly hoppy as well, with a blend of mint, a little lemon and some earth. The delicate fruitiness and softness from Upright's open-fermented house yeast is clearly present. The palate opens mildly bitter and moderately smoky, a blend of earth, bitter root, burnt caramel and mild peat. This is followed by a blend of mildly floral sweetness and some buckwheat honey. Medium in body and softly carbonated, this feels great on the palate. A lingering, smoky finish is present, a touch acidic, mildly peaty and a little sweet. Just a hint of alcohol on the finish that lends a Scotch ale note to this beer. Again, there's a depth to the palate, a je ne sais quoi, that is so common to Upright's beers. Quite excellent.
