Nocino Stout is unlike anything we’ve made in the past. Beginning as a hop forward imperial stout, the beer took on a new direction when transferred into Stone Barn bourbon and nocino barrels, the latter of which still packed with walnuts, cinnamon, and whole vanilla beans. The resulting blend is an incredible bittersweet sipper, displaying a breadth of flavors that come across both bold and nuanced.

On tap at Arch Bridge today.
The beer pours a darkish brown color with pretty decent lacing and head retention. On the nose, this beer is pretty intriguing, as I'm getting anise, coffee, vanilla, dark chocolate and some other unusual aroma, that I assume is the walnut liqueur from the barrel. There's almost something of a perfumy hand lotion component that is quite unusual (but not off putting, oddly enough). On both the nose and palate, there's something of a roasty quality. The flavor profile otherwise replicates the nose, but without the hand lotion component. However, the licorice and roasty flavor really seems to dominate, along with the vanilla and some bitter dark chocolate. The beer is moderately sweet, with a long, roasty finish. Mouthfeel is otherwise fairly full, but with a surprisingly dry-ish finish. You can tell the abv is up there a bit, but the 13% level is not what I would have guessed. Drinkability isn't bad, but its hard to imagine drinking more than the 8 ounce glass I ordered.
This is an interesting and unusual BA stout from Upright (who always seem to be pushing the envelope when it comes to experimentation). While enjoyable and impressive, I'm not sure this is a beer I need to revisit any time soon.

Crowler from the source.
The first pour is jet black with a large, dark head with excellent retention and lacing. The nose is lovely. Opening rich and dark with licorice and anise to go with baker's chocolate. On top of that is vanilla, bourbon, a touch of coconut and that silky, spicy nocino, with fleshy walnut and bitter walnut oil. Cherry bark. A bunch of cinnamon and some allspice. Moderate roast.
The palate opens bittersweet, a lovely blend of cinnamon, roast, baker's chocolate, anise, a little licorice. This is followed by vanilla, bourbon, walnut and bitters. The finish is dry, roasty with cherry bark, bittersweet chocolate. The cinnamon really grows as it warms up. Rich, full bodied, bittersweet, this is fabulous. While a little boozy, it drinks nothing like a 13% beer. Fantastic.
