Bottle #64/116.
Jet black with a dense, dark brown head with good retention and lacing. The nose is great. Hop forward with a blend of pine and earth to go with a strong cinnamon, anise and mild licorice note. A strong toasted walnut character is present. Mild vanilla. The palate opens moderately boozy, plenty bitter with a blend of hoppy, oily bitterness and a potent grainy bitterness, strong enough that I can see some describing it as mildly ashy. Strong cinnamon and anise are present, along with a mild licorice note. Creamy, full bodied, boozy with a blend of oak, vanilla, walnut and booze. Burly and brash, arguably less refined than the final blend, but a gorgeous companion piece.
