The Engelberg helped start the wave of well-hopped pils in Portland. Inspired by German examples, but brewed with a NW touch.

Remember the label and I had it about 9 or 10 months ago but don't remember anything about the beer other than the taste being very good.

16oz can. Bottom date stamp is 'CANNED ON 07/05/24'.
Cloudy, straw colored body. Big volumes of white head with the pour, and this matures to a full cap with a surface storm in the middle. Leaves behind thick webs of lacing.
Aroma of toasted malts, green apple yeast, grassy, and a bit of spice.
Taste is similar in expression to the nose with flavors of toasted biscuit malts, grassy and floral hops, and yeast phenols of fruit. Some small notes of pepper.
Medium mouthfeel. Clean finish. Upfront mineral note. Excellent carbonation.
A pilsner with a heaver dose of hops.

Pouring a cellar temp 16 oz can into my pils glass. Date stamp is 8/30/2022... oops...
The beer pours a champagne light gold to straw color, very pale . Sits only slightly more bold yellow in the glass and a bleached white spongey and frothy head of 5 cm foams up, sort of overtops the glass, even with gentle pour. Very active streams of carbonation are rising to the surface as the foam slowly melts back into the glass. Leaving soapy windowpane lattice.
Aroma is some light biscuity malt with a good dose of minerally chalkiness and some spicy hop notes. I feel like hints of rye bread buried in the nose too. No ABV hints, which makes sense.
First sip reveals a very light body with smooth to light texture. Carbonation is very fine and only a little tingly. Very easy drinking beer.
Flavor is similar to the nose, fairly light overall. Some biscuity grain and again some mineral notes. I also get spicy hops that carry a little bite on the finish. Beer also dries out quite a bit on the swallow, encouraging me to take another sip.
Pretty interesting and easy drinking Pils. Seems just fine even after sitting in my cellar for a bit. Glad to have tried this one.

draught
Sustained, medium amount of creamy white head. Light golden straw look. Faint, herbal hop and very light toasted malt aroma. Slightly sharp, herbal flavor with medium level of lightly toasted malt, for the taste.

Poured from 16oz can into a dimpled mug. Canned 8/30/22 ... OK so maybe not the freshest, but it is a pilsner, so I don't expect that to be a problem.

Appearance: pale straw hue with a little big of haze and a thick finger of frothy eggshell foam atop. Nice!

Smell: lightly sweet malt with a moderate graininess and a nice hop character. It certainly smells the part.

Taste: flavor is quite hoppy, even more so that I would have guessed from the aroma. The slightly grainy malt adds kind of an astringent quality, but there's enough sweetness that the overall effect is bracing but balanced. A refreshing quaff indeed.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of carbonation; nicely creamy for the style.

Overall: refreshing and quite drinkable indeed. There's just enough bite to the hops that you don't get bored.

Looks like a Pilsner should. Smell is sweet, floral, slightly tropical, with bubble gum yeasty notes. Taste follows. Crisp floral hops, lemon, a hint of spices, cracker malt, bubblegum, and a hint of citrus bitterness. Feel is crisp, finish is dry and slightly chalky. It grows better with each sip, and now I’m left wanting more, and I have none.

criminally underrated, this thing is astounding! one of the best american made takes on the style i can recall, and one of the driest, frankly this is epic, man oh man, what is not to love here, i simply do not understand! even if i am heaping it on here, this deserves so much more credit than it will ever get, upright too, they just crush so hard at so many things and nobody every talks about them when people talk about who the best is. they are up there, thoroughly. this is great, not at all funky or strange on the ferment even though thats what i know and love them for and even though i hoped for it. its hoppy in a northwestern aroma and flavor way, but in a properly german proportion, nice touch there, it drinks old world not new world, and thats hard to do, but the fermentation fits the theme, its bready and doughy and dusty but clean too, mineral forward, shockingly light for being so layered, and fresh like the imports rarely are, which only matters in this style after youve had a bunch of less fresh pils and helles types real recently and it stands out like this. some bitterness, some slate, some grass and lawn, some culinary herbal curiosity, but pretty known overall, just like, better than when everyone else tries to do the same thing. usually upright wins on uniqueness and quality, here its just quality, but the quality just slaps. amazing carbonation, dryness that is straight up profound or borderline impossible, and an overall mouthfeel that rivals any beer ive ever consumed. at this point i would trust these guys to brew things that arent even beer, cold brewed coffee, pots of chili, medicinal tinctures, holy water, whatever, they do everything to an absurd level. dont sleep on this, its up there with the best of the best, germany included!

Amazing clarify on this pils. White gold beer topped by cotton. Hits all the right notes, with a grassy hop kiss and a thin malt presence. Utterly fantastic.
