Had on-tap at Bottles NW in NE PDX!

- Nice clear rich red colored brew.. off-white head, quickly down to a thin layer on top...

- Sweet grains, lightly woody, slight salts with some floral hop notes, sweet bready character.

- One smooth sailing lager... malty, bready, sweet and bittered very well... not as smokey as I would like, but it did possess some nice woody character without going overboard on what must be salts and flavor additions that others may use. Very solid.

- Creamy feel, slightly drying, and only a touch chewy...

- Overall very drinkable, flavorful, and one I would certainly pick up again. I would love to see something like this in a 6-pack for about $6... am I dreaming?

On tap at the brewery tasting room and Apex beer bar.

The beer pours a reddish amber color with good head retention and lacing. On the nose, the smoked quality is noticeable, but not overdone. Otherwise, I get some sweet malt and a variety of different spices (mostly cinnamon and clove). The flavors replicate the nose pretty closely, but what really impressed me was how well balanced this beer is. Generally, I'm not a huge fan of sweet lagers like this, but this beer had enough other flavor components (smoke and spice) to counter that sweetness and keep it interesting. Also, I think it helps that the alcohol is fairly low on this beer, which seemed to keep the beer fairly light on the palate and not overly sweet. Mouthfeel was light and smooth, and drinkability was pretty good. Generally, I find this level of sweetness off putting, but the low alcohol helped, as did the smoke and spice.

Very interesting beer from Upright. Nicely done.
