Foeder IPA was brewed in collaboration with Old Standby Brewing as part of the Brewlanthropy series. It spent six weeks in a foeder, providing a tannic edge and oak notes to go with the special blend of hops. Benefitting the NE Portland Emergency Food Program.

Enjoyed at The Beermongers on draft.

Look:
A nearly opaque apricot gold, capped with a tenacious off-white head that leaves lacing which slides back into the beer.

Smell:
Quite dry, with a pleasing combo of clean malt, grapefruit pith, pine, and woody notes (oak and cedar).

Taste:
Taste opens with soft malt and a drop of orange oil, with a round oaky character like a particularly buttery chardonnay (yet not buttery enough to trigger my diacetyl aversion). Very dry, although there's a touch of sweetness through the middle, along with oaky tannins and a mild potpourri of herbs. The finish is pine and citrus pith with a firm bitterness that's amplified by the tannins.

Feel:
Light-medium body with very fine carbonation, which works with the hops and tannins to leave the palate tingling after every sip. Mild hop burn.

Overall:
Looks like a hazy NE-style IPA, but that's where the comparison ends. This is a rustic and slightly off-kilter IPA, spicy and woody and dry. The kind of thing Upright has always done so well. Layers of interest. Goes great with a good book and a rainy Spring afternoon.
