12oz bottle purchased at Mid-Columbia Wine & Spirits in Kennewick, Washington, for $1.85. No obvious freshness date. First time I’ve seen it, though M-C has had their California Common (or was it a Cream Ale?) in bombers for some time. I gave one to Beertunes and it was apparently quite horrific. Hopefully, that’s not a Whitstran trademark. According to another beer website, this is 5.6% ABV, with 16 IBUs: http://www.brewbound.com/breweries/Whitstran_Brewing_Co/Highlander .
Poured into a Boundary Bay pint glass (thanks again, Beertunes), this was a hazy, dark copper color, with a decent sized head, colored somewhere between beige and tan, that dropped fairly quickly. There was no lace to speak of.
Sweet, malty, vaguely peaty aroma, along with a little bit of diacetyl.
Whoa! Big, slightly sour apple flavor to this that totally drowns out any flavor that might have fit the style, some of which seemed present in the nose. I’m guessing this has been sitting a long time.
Fairly low carbonation to this, with a resultingly heavy, leaden mouthfeel.
Not a fan at all, though I can’t imagine this is how it’s supposed to taste. Most likely this is another undated Whitstran beer that has been sitting at either the store I bought it at (unlikely, as I didn’t see it when I was there in September) or at whoever the distributor is (maybe the brewery itself). Between my own experiences and those of Beertunes, I’m being taught that Whitstran bottles are best given a wide berth.

Poured into a MacAndrew's thistle glass. Pours a medium to dark reddish amber with a two finger light khaki head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel and biscuit malt, mildly vegetal. Flavor is semi-sweet caramel malt with light biscuit, mild dark stone fruit, hint of nuts; finishing drier and somewhat abruptly. Light to medium bodied. The malt body is light, but decent flavor balance for a scottish ale, but without any smokiness, which is a big loss for a lighter Scottish ale. Pleasant enough flavors, but could use a little more intensity and peat. May be a slightly older bottle, but no oxidation or off-flavors.
