1st review of this mega old beer written for BA. This was the 2nd beer I had at the Toronado Barleywine Fest in 2010. You can tell there is a little more time on the hands these days, finally being able to address 10 year old pours.
This one stood out for attention, given that they used 116 lbs of molasses in a 15bbl batch. Came in a brown color with a lighter brown head 1/5" and recedes to almost nothing pretty quick. Aroma was of caramel, toffee and a brown ale like earthy malt vibe.
Taste brings the usual caramel and toffee dichotomy, but sprinkled with brown sugar and a dark fruit yeast note. It was more of a session barleywine at 8.5%. Still had some kick nonetheless. These were cool because they were still legit barleywines, but at a lesser entrance price if you will. Very mild hit of vanilla. The molasses aspect I think might have been prior to fermentation, because it didn't taste like molasses, I think they just got the abv up a bit with it, since the body of the beer wasn't all that heavy, dried some out.
