Decent malty, almost creamy bitter. Dessert spice on the finish.

500ml bottle, another entry from the 4-pack of Andwell offerings now available at yer finer beer stores in Alberta. This one's name has to do with a certain King John, signatory or something of the Magna Carta, whose fort lies within walking distance of the modern-day brewery.
This beer pours a crystal clear, rusted brickish-amber hue, with one finger of lazily foamy, broadly bubbly beige head, which leaves a few random instances of island atoll lace around the glass as it hastily recedes.
It smells of menthol-like dark fruit - plum and blackberry, mostly - laid-back caramel and toffee malt, and floral, weirdly perfumed earthy hops. The taste is rich dark malt - caramel, toffee, and a hint of treacle, some mild dark raisin fruitiness, faint notes of mint leaf, and gritty earthy, weedy hops.
The carbonation is a bit fizzy, but generally agreeable, the body just on this side of medium weight, and mostly smooth, the niggly sourness from the fruit esters strangely having a say here. It finishes on the sweet side, but with a definite moderate stance - the caramel sporting a dull-edged biscuit nature, and the floral hops 'upping' the game with a tame spiciness.
An OK malty English ale, the bitter component not really firing on all cylinders, as it were. Without more hops, I fear that this would border on cloying, should one choose it to indulge in any sort of lengthy session.

Tasted by a pint @ a local JDW pub in Andover; served by a non-sparkler pour.
A: the dark reddish amber body comes with a thin & lasting light beige froth, light carbonation & great clarity.
S: the nose is lightly dusty/ashy, citric-fruity, underlined by lighter caramely malts - clean.
T: deliciously bitter-sweet fruity & zesty with orangey fruits upfront, ensued by an abundant amount of good quality pale malts & amber malts, with lots of tea-ish aroma & gristy maltiness to linger... Lightly chewy, dry-ish & spicy in the end, too. The contrast b/w aromatic malts, zesty fruits & hop bitterness is quite wonderful~
M&D: softly-carbonated, medium-bodied and flavoursome Best Bitter packing lots of hop aroma, underlying bitterness while balanced w/ a remarkable malt performance. To me, tis a quaffer regardless of seasons.
