On cask at Cove and Kilcreggan Ale Festival. Red coloured ale with a fruity and slightly doughy nose. It has a plasant resinous feel and is sweet with a rich fruity flavour.

On cask. Pours ruby brown with thin head (not a great pour to be honest). Nose is floral with just a touch of malt in the back. Taste has firmer than expected bitterness, floral and caramel notes. A pretty solid beer. Just a touch more on the nose probably would have pushed the score for smell and overall higher.

Had it hand-pumped at The Black Boy pub in Winchester, Hampshire, England. A pleasant dark amber ale, low carbonation, fruit odour and taste. The taste was also sweetly malty, with minimal hoppiness.
Not really sure why I need to write 250 chars... succinct is good!

500ml bottle, part of a mixed quad pack from Andwell Brewing now available here in Alberta. As English Ruby Ale is not (yet) a style on BA, I guess some shoehornin' is to be expected. A 'Ruddy Darter' is apparently a type of red dragonfly native to Hampshire waterways - The More You Know!
This beer pours a clear, bright red brickish amber hue, with one finger of densely foamy, somewhat bubbly beige head, which leaves some decent spooky wood hollow lace around the glass as it slowly sinks away.
It smells of sweet caramel malt, some crystallized toffee, mildly acidic, juicy black fruit - plum and blackberry, mostly - a sturdy pastry flakiness, and leafy, kind of floral, earthy hops. The taste is much less sweet than anticipated, the toffee and pie crust maltiness getting a bit shoved aside by some assertive leafy, musty, earthy noble hops, while that pie-filling fruitiness lulls about whilst hugging the wall.
The carbonation is quite reserved, just a wee tingle here and there beyond its dutiful supporting tasks, the body a generally solid medium weight, and placidly smooth. It finishes off-dry, the pastry malt and waning orchard fruitiness still in a low-fi struggle with the lingering hops.
A pleasant English red ale, the hops thankfully strong enough to keep things in check, even getting a tad overcorrective in terms of balance at times. Which is ample reason to classify this as a bitter - and the drinkability just seals the deal.
