On tap at the Linda Vista Brewery
4oz pour – 09/05/14
A: Pours a super dark chocolate brown color with a sort of murky look. Thin layer of sandstone colored cream comes to rest along the top. Soft drapery of creamy lace left to the glass.
S: Earthy roast aromatics entice notes of coffee bean with a faint cocoa powder dusting. I get a light brown sugar sweetness to the nose as well. Touch of green and earthy hops there. Pretty nice and clean overall.
T: Flavors pick up more on the chocolate than the nose does with an upper level of earthy hop bitterness to this. Roast malts and dark bread. Green roast coffee with some lightly understated sweetness of brown sugar. Really well hidden alcohol for such a big beer. Very smooth and well balanced given the bigger hop presence. Really nice flavors to this and it is quite tasty.
M: Moderate to moderately heavy body with a fair amount of carbonation and some prickly hop bitterness to cut things back a few notches. Finish is dry and clean with a crisp feel.
D: Very sessionable for such a big beer offering up some really nice roast flavors. Hoppier than expected but it works well providing a lighter feel to the brew. Nice offering here at the brewery and something they should consider packaging.
