Notes taken on 05/21/2015 – 8oz. pour into a Tulip glass
A: Oily jet black with a slight ruddy brown at the edges. Small amount of mocha tan film develops on the surface with very little retention noted. Light oily dotting across the glass but fairly minimal on the sticky stuff.
S: Boozy rum soaked oak with chocoalte cake, dark grains, toasted coconut, vanilla bean, and dark caramels. Quite a decadent rum filled treat with some caramelized fruit mixed in. I get some light earthy spice there but not much coffee to the nose. The rum spirit however has a nice presence here that goes well with the dessert qualities of this brew.
T: The taste is earthy and rich with a dark chocolate cake batter quality. Like melted chocolate bathed in rum casks with vanilla bean and dark berries added. Has a nice oak barrel tannin presence that plays well with the roast grains and creamy vanilla. There is a moderate amount of bitterness to this with some alcohol warmth and a light espresso finish. Just an incredibly smooth sipper that is not charred or acrid at all.
M: Fully bodied and semi viscous. Has a very smooth feel to it with a seemingly lower amount of carb to it. Finishes with some drying and bit of boozy tingle from the heat. Lightly sleek feel on after.
D: An incredibly nice treat to find. While I lose some of the coffee here I think the Rum barrel spirit is really well blended and marries perfectly into all the dessert like attributes of V@S. Ballast Point bottle this please!
