On-tap at the brewpub.
Pours black with a half-finger light brown head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.
Smells of strongly roasted malts with good amounts of robust coffee. Also wafting out are hints of char and unsweetened chocolate.
Tastes similar to how it smells. Roasted malt flavors with hints of char kick things off. Joining in shortly thereafter are hints of mildly bitter coffee that fade out midway through the sip. The char and roasted malt flavors are joined by very light unsweetened chocolate notes that carry through to a solidly bitter ending.
Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with grainy carbonation.
Drinkability is also good. I had no problems finishing my glass and could have another.
Overall this didn't quite have the body and flavor profile to be a great beer but with a few tweaks to add just a touch of sweetness this could be up there. Worth a shot to see for yourself.
