Appearance: Inky black body with a smallish, though persistent, deep tan-hued head.

Smell: Woodsy, earthy with a well-integrated whiskey nose smoothed over by notes of chocolate, coffee grinds, and fiber-rich dark fruits.

Taste: The whiskey is noted immediately, ahead of the chocolate, light anise, vanilla, and coffee dunked prunes. Slight, slight tart tanginess. Fruity accents of the aforementioned prunes but also some black currant. Very low hop character, bitterness, though you've got some faintly puckering tannins from the oak and a smidge of alcohol. Subtly malty, fruity finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-plus carbonation. It's smooth but also crisp.

Overall: Enjoyable, though the crucial key here was the carbonation.

A: Pours pitch black with a finger of dense tan head. Retention is nice.

S: Strong bourbon aroma with milk chocolate and caramel. Vanilla and coffee are in the background.

T: Much heavier on the roast than the smell let on. Bourbon is still strong, but there is very little sweetness to this beer, all of which is imparted by the bourbon. Coffee comes through pretty well, but this beer is quite dry and roasty.

M: Quite thin for the style. It makes for a very drinkable beer, but I'd like it thicker.

O: A bit dry for me, but pretty decent.
