Oct. 2010: Bottle from Traditional Scottish Ales, kindly shared by gunnar. ABV is 4.5%. Beautiful deep brown colour, moderate beige head. Very nice malty aroma with vinous notes, caramel and dark dried fruits, hints of oak. Malty flavour, preserved fruits, hints of oak, moderate bitterness.

500 ml bottle with a new label but still listing 4.5% ABV. BB date of April 2016 (1 year away).

Accurately described on the label as "Slightly sweet and malty taste with a hint of toffee."
Sweet and malty but, given this, the balance seems good, no defects, but limited complexity.
Improved with warming.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of June 2013. Picked up ages ago from Aldi - put on sale to coincide with Burns night.

Poured into a straight pint glass. A coppery-amber colour with some floating sediment and plentiful carbonation. Forms a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a while before reducing to a patchy surface layer. Aroma of grainy malt with hints of nuttiness, caramel, earthy yeast, grass and stewed leaves. Faintly sweet.

Tastes of grainy caramel malt with a dry finish. Notes of grain, mild caramel, earthy yeast, nuttiness, grass and stewed hops. A faint hint of harsh cardboard in the background, followed by a restrained bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with decent carbonation but so-so body for the style. Could be creamier. Somewhat astringent, with an aftertaste of acrid stewed leaves, grainy malt and earthy yeast.

A rather humdrum ale from this Scottish brewery. Looks alright, with a nice head, but the aroma and flavour are dull and unimaginitive. Grain and earthiness dominate. Body is lacklustre. Drinkable enough but nowt to write home about - no need to seek it out.

Finally breeched the Aldi bought 500ml bottle: best before Jun 2013, it was shared with a friend on 15 Feb 2013 during a random tasting evening at home.

Mid-brown, bordering on amber in colour: a thin white head sat on each half-pint glass.

Malts first and foremost: sweet molasses taking over the smell and taste. Caramel and butterscotch notes make this one sweet beer. The hops can't hold the malty strengths and although this isn't sickly in any way: it certainly isn't a hoppy brew, nutty notes and hints of wood about, but mostly malts.

A little unbalanced: but I like sweet malty brews, so it was OK with me.

500ml bottle, part of a slew of new offerings in Alberta, from the less than specific outfit of "Traditional Scottish Ales". The titular Scottish hero glares out menacingly from the label.

This beer pours a crystal clear, medium golden brassy hue, with two pudgy fingers of silky and foamy off-white head, which leaves a pockmarked wall of heavily painted lace around the glass as it duly recedes.

It smells of crisp, biscuity, and bready caramel malt, some brown sugar sweetness, and prominent leafy and earthy hops - gee, just like an ESB should be, eh? The taste is more biscuity, grainy, and somewhat caramelized and fresh baked bread-tinged malt, a mildly sour orchard fruity astringency, and some earthy and leafy noble hoppiness.

The bubbles are nice and soft, the body on the light side of yer typical middleweight, and generally smooth in the face of a slightly cloying nature. It finishes off-dry, the breadiness kind of sweet, the biscuit character less so, and the leafy and earthy hops doing their workaday best.

Overall, a pleasantly surprising ESB, as the label is quite vague in its style description, but no worries - it becomes rather clear straight away. Enjoyable, and worthy of a round or two or more - the ABV aiding, and certainly abetting.

Bought as part of Aldi supermarkets 'Best of Scotland' promotion

pours a nice cola brown body with a slight of white decent head

aromas are laid back brown sugar, brown sauce and barley.

The taste is more of a brown ale, subtle roasts slight chocolate hints and tings of brewers mash with a bit of a soda aftertaste not a big hitter in the taste dept

nice carbonation and a solid mouthfeel leave not a great beet but barely passable.
