500ml bottle, the name commemorating a Scottish victory over the English army at...jeez, is this becoming a theme!

This beer pours a rather dark ruby amber hue, with one miserly finger of tight foamy pale beige head, which leaves little in the way of lace around the glass as it rashly absconds.

It smells big and malty - Lowlands-style - toffee-heavy and fruity, with the aged citrus and dark raisin notes predominating, with a hint of baker's chocolate, and a mild, earthy hoppiness. The taste is more softly malty than the nose led on - some pushy biscuit character takes well advantage, amongst the still strong, and somewhat musty orchard fruitiness, with a subtle dry cocoa essence, and soft leafy, grassy hops rounding thing out.

The carbonation is present, yet generally understated in its effect, the body a sturdy medium weight, and a bit too tacky in its end run at total smoothness. It finishes off-dry, the bready, biscuity character proving the provenance of this offering.

Kind of like a Black Bitter, if that style existed here, or anywhere - lots of agreeable English Bitter attributes, with the roasted notes to push it farther afield, to, say, Scotland. The lack of that country's specific styles here is increasingly baffling to me. Anyway, a decent bitter, with the same style-defying roasted effects purportedly enjoyed in Cascadia...
