A brief background about this beer before the review. Great Western (GW) opened their doors back in March 1990 (or 91) and only had one beer at that time, GW Beer. Eventually they expanded their line up to include a light beer and a stronger beer (GW Gold). A few years later, they tried to catch on with the latest fad beers put out by the big companies: GW Ice and GW Draft. Both of these beers are still available today and are GW's only beers available in 2L bottles.
GW Draft was basically their response to some of the more popular beers of the day Labatt Genuine Draft and Miller Genuine Draft (brewed at the time by Molson). Described on the label as a Premium Pub Draft, this beer is only available in 2L bottles (definitely not available in cans or glass bottles, might be available in keg). Most of GW's line up underwent a change in the late 90's early 2000's and this is one of the few (3 I believe) left overs from the early days.
2L plastic bottle with screw top cap poured in a pint glass.
Straw yellow in colour and clear. Big foamy white head takes up the top 1/4 of my pint glass. The thick head reduces to a thick ring around the edge leaving gobs of lacing.
Aroma is adjuncts, adjuncts and more adjuncts. Grains, corn, petrol notes and maybe a hint of floral hops. Ugh... this really smells like a beast of an adjunct lager.
Yikes... after two sips I've got shivers running up my spine, hairs standing on end and it's an effort not to regurgitate. I'll try to give some kind of flavour report. There's a really strong chemical/formaldehyde taste throughout that basically kills off everything else. The only other flavour I get is a light corn sweetness after the carbonation rush, but that's swept away quickly by the chemical aspect. Aftertaste is like bathroom cleaning spray.
Harsh caustic mouthfeel with moderate carbonation.
This is basically an all out chemical assault on the senses. They call this Natural Draft, but there's nothing natural about the taste. This is the horrible type of beer that Great Western came out with in their early years, so if you liked that crap, then you can reminisce about the old days with this stuff. Otherwise AVOID!
