So they aged their red ale in pinot oak barrels, and it clocked in at 5.8% ABV and 38 IBUs. Made with 5 malts and 4 hop additions of Magnum, Willamette and East Kent Goldings. On draught at the Oregon Brewers Festival, I had a full pint in the plastic mug, and took good notes

The Red Thistle Quercus (which is the white oak genus) is a hazy reddish burgundy, with a big, light khaki head that leaves thick foamy lace. By far the best aspect of the brew.

The smell is almost entirely phenols, plastic and dusty, with a touch of floral hops and wine. As plasticy as this was, it was strangely inoffensive.

Much like the aroma, the taste is very plasticy. Of course I recognize that some of that may be from the plastic mug I'm forced to use here at the fest, but none of the other beers have had anything like this. I've never had a beer so dominated by phenols, as they really detract from the vinousness, which barely pokes out from behind. Also, while not good, it was strange that this wasn't as terrible as it sounds. But a disappointment nevertheless. So this is what the red pill tastes like? I should have chose the blue one!

The vionusness really comes through in the mouthfeel, as it coats and clings to the entire mouth much red wine. The body is medium.

At first I thought this was terrible, but by the end, I was less indignant, but far from impressed. Either way, it was a slow drinker, and I struggled with the last third.
