A 500ml clear glass bottle with a BB of Oct 2018. Purchased recently from Morrisons. The label describes it as a warming winter ale with cinnamon, orange and clove - perfect for Christmas.
A: Poured into a tulip pint glass. A clear coppery-amber colour with plentiful carbonation. Forms a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a minute or two before subsiding to a patchy surface layer. Slight lacing.
S: Aroma of caramel malt with hints of candied orange peel, cinnamon, subtle clove, fruity ale yeast, mild stewed leaves and a faint harsh twang in the background. OK; more balanced than some spiced ales out there.
T: Tastes of caramel malt with notes of cinnamon, clove, stewed spice/leaves, vague orange and fruity ale yeast. A harsh quality lurks in the background. Slightly sweet, followed by a moderate bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with spritzy carbonation and a somewhat insubstantial body. Could be a shade thicker for the strength. Aftertaste of caramel malt, harsh stewed leaves/spice, cinnamon, orange peel and ale yeast.
O: It's alright, but not the best of the Speckled Hen variants. Looks OK, while the aroma and flavour are a reasonable blend of spice, orange, caramel malt and yeast. Acrid hints in the background detract from the character. Average body. Drinkable and better than some similar efforts from other breweries, but ultimately a bit mismatched. I think the spice in this ale would pair better with a darker malt bill. No need to hunt it down.
