Classic amber ipa look with very thin white head that disappeared to nothing.
Lovely nose, salt water taffy, brief glimpses of hops and ground pepper with citrus hints and floral aromas.
Searing malt combined biscuit and grain with the yeasty tang that GK is famed for tapering into a lacklustre hop finish
great start even tho it is GK but needed a bit more hops on the finish.
Low carbonation, maybe even a little too low but a bit of a chewy toffee mouthfeel wins this back
better than expected, not quite there but close

355 mL clear bottle poured into a pint glass.
A: clear bronze in colour with a fluffy off-white one-finger head that lingers a while and leaves a tiny bit of bubbly lacing.
S: first cracked open the cap and was hit by an initial waft of alcoholic-beer goodness--this was from around 18 inches away (never had that happen quite like that). Further sniffs gets malty, fruity and a touch of hops.
T: very sweet upfront with a tongue of bitterness on the aftertaste, hints of banana too but not too overpowering--very nice!
M: smooth and almost syrupy initially but with the carbonated bite once the drink is in your mouth. Otherwise light and refreshing.
O: when you name a beer "very special," you'd better deliver. I don't generally like higher ABV beers (anything much over 6% is generally too much for my tastebuds), but this is very nice!

Clear 355cl bottle of a deep golden amber beer, best before the end of Mar 2011. Reviewed on 13th Feb 2011.
Poured into a Greene King badged chalice. Looked fine, clear and bright, on top a small wispy white head.
Malty aroma, hides the hops completely, the taste follows, very little hop content to be found until the mouth begins to dry towards the end of the sip.
Interestingly different in my eyes, certainly the sweetest, maltiest IPA I've ever had.
I am not a fan of the way Greene King conduct their bussiness, but some of their beers are good: this one being typical of the type I like (on the fairly sweet side and malty).

I've had two bottles of this and these are notes from my second bottle. I am trying to be objective.
This is copper bronze to look at with a tight and dense thinnish head. Not much of distinction on the nose really.
Taste is more demanding. There is a hint of dry dusty hardness to start followed by some alcohol fuelled toffee before finally reaching some non threatening long bitterness at the end.
Another Greene King 'safe' beer brewed with its signature yeast. Not bad but given that this was rigorously researched and brewed from a hoppy Victorian recipe I'm surprised that quality doesn't come through more. Apparently the brewmaster isn't a great hop fan and intentionally toned the hop quality down.Shame. And who knows how much this beer suffered from its clear blottle?
Still, I have no regrets about drinking it. It has a nice taste, a very drinkable morishness really but if you're looking for a hop attack in this 'Very Special IPA then best to go elsewhere.
