Not very hoppy for an IPA. Aroma and taste are weak and mouthfeel is watery. However flavor emerges when it warms a bit. Elements of caramel and toffee come through...

This IPA is a very dark amber color. Very clear but more like the color I would expect from a British Scotch Ale or some similar style. Not an appearance that is typical to an IPA. Head retention was pretty poor.

The 'smell' is probably the greatest aspect of this ale. It has a LOT of hop aroma erupting out of it from the first moment the bottle was cracked. Had me excited for a very hoppy IPA (Which is rare for this part of the world). Earthiness/Marmalade, i think, are the strongest hop aromas.

In the taste a lot of the hops seamed to disappear. It is still good, but more of the sweetness that is traditional to English IPAs comes out. I dinged it in this category because I like an IPA to have hops characteristics that stand up and dominate the experience.

Mouthfeel is good but I wished for a little more dryness. The sweetness is great for a English IPA but for overall IPA as a style, it is just above average.

A: Pours ruby red with a large, but fluffy/soapy tan head that sets into somewhat nice lacings.

S: Grassy and grainy, some buttery English notes. Some fruit and some bitter hops.

T: Bready and bitter. Caramell malt holds only faint sweetness. Grassy and fruity; red apples and nettles. Some buttery notes in the back.

M: Aftertaste lingers with a nice bitterness. Body is medium while carbonation is kind of mellow.

O: Just above average.

Appearance: The beer pours a dark amber body with lots of carbonation. The clarity is normal.

Smell: Nothing really stands out except a sour malt aroma. A slight hint of hops can be detected after a few minutes.

Taste: The beer is rather bland, especially for a supposed IPA. An earthy, yet somehow sour, taste is first noticed. There is a trace of hop bitterness at the end but not nearly enough for the style.

Mouth feel: It's medium bodied with a good balance of carbonation and dryness. This is probably the best aspect of the beer.

Overall: It's a passable attempt at the style. Yet, I've had normal English Pale Ale's with greater complexity. It really could use a greater hop presence or something a little more than the sour malt taste upfront.

Brewed exclusively for the 2011 Wetherspoon Spring beer festival, according to the blurb in the tasting notes.

Challenger and First Gold hops give this beer a great hoppy aroma and taste.

The clear amber body and thin white head look good and the dry aftertaste and bitterness given by the aforementioned hop content produce a very fine beer indeed.

I am not a huge fan of this brewery in general, but this and some other beers they brew are in fact very good.
