Poured from a growler filled @ The Ruddy Duck in Solomon's Island Md, into flute glass. Beer is completely black save for a slight reddish-Brown highlight near the top when held up to a light. Capped by a thin tan head that falls away rather quickly. light lacing.
Nose has notes of toasted malt with some herbal hops.
Flavors start with roasted malts, slightly biscuit-like, with coffee coming in soon after. Finish is very clean, medium-dry, with just a bit of Euro-style lager hops lingering along with the aforementioned coffee.
Mouth-feel is very light and crisp, very easy to drink. This is one you could give to a friend who dislikes 'dark' beers and surprise them.
Ruddy Duck's Shwartzbier is a very solid if not jaw-dropping representation of the style... still it's very easy to drink, should pair well with much of their food menu, and presents a nice alternative to the typical pilsner lagers and such. Not the best beer they make, but I would certainly drink this again.

On tap at the Ruddy Duck. Poured into a standard tap glass.
A - Deep, dark black. Light penetrates to outermost top edge but that's it. One finger head that dissipates quickly. (as a side note, almost every beer from the Duck has the same head consistency).
S - faint roasted malts and coffee. The nose is very minimal.
T - roasted malt comes out strong but fades. Coffee bitterness carries it through to a surprisingly carbonated finish. Bitterness vanishes quickly as well. Not real complex but for the style, pretty good offering.
M - very clean and crisp for a "dark" beer. Carbonation is perhaps a bit high but all in all pretty well done.
O - not my favorite style, but I must admit that the Duck's offering is a pretty good schwartzbier. Flavor profile could be stronger and carbonation a bit lower, but very drinkable. With the low ABV, this could easily be a sessionable dark lager. Nice offering.
