Pint glass at the Santa Barbara Brewing Company.

Pours a deep dark brown. Small copper brown head. Smells are subdued. Hints of carob and restrained coffee. Some light breadiness as well. Not much on the nose for this one.

Flavors are robust but smooth. Good burnt malts. A healthy carob and molasess flavor start this stout in a good direction. Some toasted bread. Fruity plumbs and berries are at first in the background but make a good statement as it warms. The fruits do give this stout a surrounding sweetness. I did not mind it but some could find it too sweet. A medium bitterness and unsweetened dark chocolate at the end is a welcome compliment to remind one this is an imperial stout. The flavors start strong, mellow and then give a hearty finish.

The mouthfeel is easy and smooth. The 9% alcohol is well hidden. No burn. The body is medium heavy which makes this stout a very easy drinker which could let the 9% ABV sneak up on some, so sip this one. A very nice stout. A real treat at the end of the day.

Note: I had this stout from the cask at the '8th annual strong ale festival.' I remember the flavors not being as sweet as from the tap. Drinkability was about the same. I did not take notes at the strong ale festival and therefore I am reviewing it from the tap.
