Criolos is described as the drink of the Aztec Gods, although its made in Alsace with the collaboration of a former Frenchs best chocolate maker. The beer is apparently brewed with only barley, hop and cacao beans.
Beautiful dark color. Head was small and non persistent.
Smells like an average lager, I couldnt smell any chocolate there at first. After sipping on it for a few minutes, I thought the smell of chocolate became more important, which was interesting.
The taste was pretty basic, like other Schutzenberger beers: very hoppy and not very complex. The aftertaste was clearly the thick bitterness of chocolate.
It takes a few minutes for the chocolate aspects to express themselves in the smell and the taste. The beer has to served at 10-13 degrees Celsius to reveal all its potential.
The beer is better than other beers made by the brewery, but I'm sure there are better chocolate beers out there.
