Oyster House India Pale Ale
The Lobster Trap

Appearance: Arrives with a hazy amber color and an inch of foam that leaves a few streaks of lacing

Smell: Rather citrusy, with a bit of bread and a hint of caramel underneath

Taste: The bready malts lead off, bringing just a hint of caramel, but the hops arrive in a millisecond to add a citrusy tone that dominates through the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A very nicely done, everyday IPA, with just enough malt to allow the citrus to dominate the performance

 

 

From notes back in August. Cask at Oyster House.
A very dark almost brown orangy pour. That typical cask murkiness. Not much head.

Aroma, well blended pine, citrus and caramelly malt.

Taste, Caramel base gives way to a nice herbal pine and citrus blend. Stays there with a mildly bitter finish.

Almost creamy from the cask. Extremely smooth and coating, yet very drinkable.

Appearance: Lightly hazed, medium copper body with a slowly settling white head.

Smell: Pale malts in the fore with traces of sliced bread and light caramel, slowly yielding towards the more aromatic hops with their fruity, tropical notes.

Taste: Standard pale malts supported by a bit of sweet caramel. Well-rounded hop flavors present, with plenty of grapefruit and tangerine with a staunch resinous, grassy backing. Moderate bitterness. Hint of mango emerging in the flavor as it warms. A pinch of warming alcohol on the soft, bitter finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel.

Drinkability: A smooth, tasty, well-built IPA. Once we started slowly ordering food, it helped to cut through the richness of the Lobster House's lobster bisque.

Copper orange color with thin sheen of light colored head. Nothing to retain, but did yield a thin full lace down the sides of the glass.

Very bright red ale nose with hints of licorice. Not what I was expecting. A little on the weak side for an IPA.

The taste was citrus, citrus, and citrus. Crisp, clean hit followed by a sharp middle and a tangy sharp hop bite in the finish. Lots of orange and grapefruit from the hops.

Body was not quite creamy enough to balance the hop profile.

A great tasting beer.

The second of the two beers I got to try from them. This is near the top of my favorite style so lets see what they can do.

The pour was nicely done again, similar in look to the pale ale with a nice amber color and a smooth, even head of white on the top. Nice lacing here as well. Deep citrus aroma, oranges, light grapefruit are all readily apparent here. Warming brings a light balance to it but it is clear this is a hoppy IPA. Bringing it in for a taste confirms this quite nicely. Nice bitter and bright hops are out front. Drying the palate before a nice wave of buttery malt kicks in balancing it nicely. Smooth and mellow, the medium body serves the profile well as it washes over the tongue. Nice finish as the strong hops flavor comes back around one last time and leaves me looking for another one almost immediatly.

Overall this was a really well done IPA I have to admit. I was not expecting them to be soo on point right out of the box, but this is pretty damn good. Go checkthem out if you get a chance.
