Mod Pod IPA honors our three pods of Southern Resident Orca whales living full-time in the Puget Sound, the J, K, and L Pods. Currently numbering 78 whales, our whales are a treasure worthy of reflection and thought. In particular, we think of Granny (J-2) who was the leader of the J, K, and L Pods and is considered to have been the oldest orca in the world when she died in 2016 after 107 years of gracing our waters. Granny was the Matriarch of the Southern Resident Community, and we brew Mod Pod IPA in her honor. Enjoy and observe.

Rated 8-17-2019. I remember the name and the can, but nothing else about this beer. I gave it a good rating because it had a nice flavor profile.

Draft at Taphouse. Hazy pour with huge fluffy head. Aroma is fruity, light. Taste is also very subdued, in a good way, nothing obliteraes the palate, and you can taste everything. Fruity, light bitterness, citrus and tropical notes.

Good ones were really good, but most ones were flat. If not flat, taste is a 4.5.

Really tastes like ash. It looks and smells so much better than it tastes! It’s like someone lit a match in my mouth and doused it with filthy water. Really bummed.

12oz canned 10-29-19. Opened 1-15-19 catching this one 14 days within it's recommended 90 day range.
1/2" white head, decent retention - eventually falls to a 1/8" cap with the beginnings some nice lacing. The beer is very pale orange/gold and is opaque.
Tropical fruit and green weedy nose. Pineapple and berry.
Ripe melon. Very nice...I like this flavor, very more-ish. Tropical fruits are present but take a secondary role to the melon. Lightly bready malt base.
Bright entry, light to medium body, same on carbonation. Very balanced and medium length finish.
Very good. Packed with flavor even close to 90 days in. Will seek out again.

I think this is the first disappointing beer I've had from Fremont, and I've had quite a few (checks the numbers ...35!).
Mod Pod is more a New England IPA than a traditional American IPA. It's not all the way to the pure alcoholic fruit juice with zero bitterness stuff than some brewers put out. But it's closer to that than most of Fremont's offerings. And I guess I'm just not too fond of fruit juice IPAs. I like other fruit beers ... the New Glarus stuff is wonderful. And I'm very fond of Flanders Reds and the like. But somehow the fruity NE IPAs leave me cold. This ModPod is enough that way that I didn't finish it. It's got some bitterness, unlike some NEIPAs, but the combination still doesn't work for me.
I think if you like that sort of beer, you might well like this. Different strokes, and all that.
Great can design, and a nice connection to our Orca pods, but that doesn't really have anything to do with the beer.

2 week old can, Tropical fruity and floral aromas and flavors, the juicy sweetness here balanced by an earthy dankness, which seems to be a signature of many Fremont IPA's. Overall score 93.

canned 10/29/19.....so one month old.
This is a hazy....though it doesn't say that anywhere.
I despise such swill.
Disregarding that....the beer has small to med. sized, angular, white particles slowly dropping out of suspension; Against the tan-color background, it's quite noticeable.....and offputting. It's probably just wheat flour, which is the kind of crap they add for "haze-making". Just stupid.

Hazy yellow brew with plenty of foam in the Blanche de Chambly goblet. Expansive aroma of peach with a hint of dankness and darkness. Huge peach and apricot taste. Fairly sweet and malty. Why not? There's a spritzy and tangy mouthfeel.
Quite lush, overall, with more pineapple and canned peach syrup as you sip. Some green and herbal notes round out the fruit train. Moderate bitter aftertaste. This is yet another of Fremont's fruity hop concoctions that manage to be mellow enough to be drinkable. From the 12 oz can seen everywhere in Washington.

Poured from 12oz can into a tulip. Can is dated 10/11/19.
Appearance: very hazy yellow hue with a thin layer of frothy white foam atop. It's a classic hazy IPA look.
Smell: tropical aromas of papaya and guava and some lighter notes of pineapple and citrus. This is right up my alley.
Taste: those tropical flavors show up again up front in the flavor, although they are subtler than in the aroma. There's a moderate amount of maltiness, and it's not too sweet. The finish has kind of a harsher flavor than I'd like; not super bitter, per se, but without the delight of the first sip. It's still darn good, though.
Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent level of carbonation and a good creaminess for an IPA.
Overall: I like this beer a lot, though I'd like it more if the flavor delivered a little bit more on the promise of the aroma.
