Head Full of Dynomite v.17: Citra & Lotus

These brews usually find their way to my local mini market a week out from the canning date, but I tend to like them better with about 5 weeks of age. At eight weeks old, it's now turning slightly vegetal but the lotus hops impart a floral aroma and a subtle candied flavor, almost caramel, to go along with the tropical fruits and the sharp bite of hops. Always enjoy the brews in this series.

16oz can poured into a Sam Smith nonic.

A: Cloudy orange juice; big-time white head with tiny bubbles and lots of lace.

S: Explodes with juice notes, but not pungent, more soft and sweet; pineapple, orange and melon dominate. Hint of crackery malt.

T: Very good but not quite the level of the nose; tropical and fruity - pineapple, sweet grapefruit, orange, tangerine, papaya, mango. Malt is buried beneath.

MF: Soft, light, and crushable.

O: These are always good and this version is no disappointment. Definitely worth trying; Fremont has it dialed in.

i dont know anything about lotus hops, nothing at all, but i know this is another firework in this series, a beer thats delicious and distinctive. its hard to do that with 17 or more hazy beers, i feel like any two or three of them are pretty samey, generally speaking, but not with fremont, who continues to impress across all styles. the citra isnt even its usual self in this, like sure its juicy and soft and recognizable, but its so much more than that, like whatever lotus hops are, are really sexy and important here, and i cant wait to learn more. i think overall the beer could be a little more refined, like this is almost too hazy and starchy and weighty and it comes across as a little bit sloppy, but thats the style now, and props for being fully on trend with this. i cant hate though, the hops rule, and its not just the same old batch of cookies, they really have made a unique ipa again, and this one even has some bitter bite to it, despite still being so heavily dry hopped. lemongrass and weed, orange and pineapple candy, white smarties, if you remember those, and some undeniable juiciness and freshness. its cool how they have gotten one after the other of these to the markets quickly and freshly and all, and i dont mind paying for that, it must be a logistical nightmare, but its worth it for the consumer, and this is another winner in an incredible series of modern hoppy beer. i am thankful this exists in my world!

 

 

Pint can dated January 27, so a month old. Bright cantaloupe, avocado, and wildflower honey notes on the nose. Florals, lemongrass and green mango on the palate, with moderate hop burn on the back end in the throat.

Poured into a Tree House glass a pretty nice cloudy pale yellow/orange color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy one-finger off-white head, which also leaves some pretty nice sticky lacing behind. The nose is hoppy, malty, with a pretty nice citrus complex (orange, tangerine, pineapple, mango, peach, melon, apricot, guava), pretty nice diesel like. Medium body, ABV hidden very nicely, with a nice little dry/bitter finish. Overall, this is a very tasty brew. Orange Julius! Addictive! MilkShake! Nice to see it around here, again.

Poured from a 16 ounce can into a tulip glass.

Look- Straw, hazy, some visible sediment, average head retention and lacing.

Smell- Pineapple, melon, tropical, orange.

Look- Orange, pineapple, melon, slightly piney finish.

Feel- Medium body, slightly below average carbonation.

Quite hazy amberish brew with long-lasting foam in the Dogfish IPA glass. Fruity as usual with a deep orange aroma. Flavors of green grapes and a whole range of citrus peels, ending with an extremely sharp heat. Some malty sweetness.

The aftertaste is marred by a little too much of the raw grain residue that tickles in the back of the throat unpleasantly. It's also rather hot with acidity. An interesting brew that doesn't live up to the pleasure of most other "Dynomites." From the 16 oz can purchased in southern Calif.
