This is our tribute to Matt Bonney, our fallen brother from another mother! Our lover of his wife Lynn, Vans shoes, cigars, beer, Clutch, Scotch, Jeeps and centaurs. Bonney helped to shape the beer community here in Seattle, was wise beyond his earth years, an inspiration to many, the glue that brought so many together for so many years and so many beers and left us all too soon. What better beer than a barleywine ale? We brewed this beer soon after Matt left us with a group of friends and aged it in barrels that bring elements of the Man, the Myth, the Legend to liquid form. For those of you that knew him, there are peat barrels – he had an affinity for cigars and peaty scotch – Jack Daniels barrels, let’s just say 3 fingers worth in a bucket and ex-bourbon vanilla bean barrels which reminds us of what his Jeep smelled like. Matt would have liked a Viking funeral, one where flaming arrows were shot at his boat as he floated out to sea and the great beyond. So turn the music up, light something on fire and drink up; Matt would want it to be no other way.

Down & Dirty: Maris Otter Pale, Triticale Munich, Crystal, Dark Crystal and Cherrywood Smoked malts, with Northern Brewer hops.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark red-brown with little light transmission in the glass and a one finger khaki head with great retention and solid lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, raisins, dates, vanilla and bourbon; inviting. Flavor follows, with dry caramel malt, raisins, dates, bourbon, vanilla, apple brandy with some sherry in the finish. Medium bodied with moderate creaminess. I held this one a little longer than I should have; I like to have barleywines within 3 years, but it has apparently held up beautifully. Has a lot of English barleywine character, but with some light fruit notes from the bourbon and some fortified wine character that develops in the finish. Great combination of flavors and interesting flavor changes during a sip; darker fruit at first developing into lighter fruit. The one thing apparently missing is any peaty character, which I would have liked; I'm unable to detect much smokiness at all. Still an outstanding blended barleywine that I'm glad to have had the chance to try. Fremont has mastered big stouts and barleywine and also apparently blending too. Kudos.

Bomber at barleywine share. Dark brown pour with a small off-white head that did not last long. Aroma is malty, toffee, a little boozy. taste is caramel and chocolate, vanilla, fig, leather and some alcohol heat.

This one pours a slightly murky golden dark brown color, with a small head, and a little bit of lacing.

This smells like earthy vanilla, caramel candies, light smoke, toffee, milk chocolate, and oak.

I'm glad the peated component of this one is just a portion of the blend, rather than a single barrel. There's a touch of smoke and earthiness, almost like an herbal vanilla thing, and it adds a really fascinating counterpoint to the sweet candied caramel and chocolate you otherwise get here. There's also toffee, oak, bourbon, and a vague spiced character.

This is thick and creamy, with very little booziness, and a really nice drinkability.

This was definitely a really cool and unique blend of barrels that probably wouldn't have been as good on their own - but together, they make a great barleywine.
