12oz can purchased at Huckleberry's, in Spokane, WA, for $2.19.
Poured into an Iron Goat snifter, there was briefly a big, lively, bubbly head that was colored somewhere between beige and gray - very weird. Said head dropped fairly quickly but left an
enduring thin foam collar. The color of the beer itself appears to be a nondescript black unless held up to direct light, at which point a brown color can be seen at the edges.
The nose is what I would imagine a cola made with dark malts would smell like. There's a roasty, coffee like smell, but also a sugary smell. I suspect this is going to be another one of those na stouts that doesn't really resemble the real thing.
My suspicion was confirmed upon tasting. This has a roasty, bitter coffee like flavor, but there's also an indefinable and odd sweetness and, especially surprisingly, a bit of a coriander-ish, banana like "wang." It's not unpleasant to drink, but it's not something I can drink and feel like I'm drinking a regular stout, either.
Fairly watery mouth feel.
This is yet another occasion where I have drunk a non-alcoholic beer and come away with the feeling that what I have consumed is a noble failure. Really, the only NA beer that has worked for me has been Fremont's NA IPA. I'm sufficiently intrigued by NA options that I will continue to try them on occasion, but I'm beginning to feel like I'm never going to be truly impressed by most of them.
