This year’s release of Spice-Bomb was aged in 8 to 12 year-old American oak bourbon barrels and is a blend of 9, 12 and 24 month old barrel-aged winter ale. Spice-Bomb achieves distinct oak, cacao, leather, toffee and dark coffee notes from its extended barrel-aging and barrel blending. This special edition adds winter spices to complement the gentle embrace of bourbon barrel-aged warmth. Each barrel contributes a different note, and combining each barrel to create a coherent tone is a distinct art and true pleasure. Please do enjoy this unique barrel-aged ale today but know that Spice-Bomb will age gracefully for at least another five years. Don’t be afraid to be abominable.

Dark brown pour with a light brown head and nice carbonation. The smell to me is predominantly allspice, and the taste is cherry, caramel and oak. A good strong ale!

Note: I opened this at 50 degrees, and wasn’t terribly impressed, but it got dramatically better as it warmed. I drank my second bottle at near room temperature, and it was excellent.

Wow, is this a fun and amazing beer. Definitely lives up to the billing. When cold, it’s pure cinnamon. After warming, however, it rounds out quite well. Barrel seems well hidden, but it’s there. I like it.

375ml wax top bottle poured into a snifter

A- pours a deep brown color with a one-finger foamy off-white head that reduces to a ring

S- the spices are immediately noticed with the allspice and nutmeg both playing a roll up front. As it warms a bit, plenty of barrel notes emerge, adding barrel juice, bold oak, vanilla & caramel. Undertones of pipe tobacco, leather, chocolate, cherry even picking up a sweet vermouth-like note, similar to the aroma of a Manhattan. High complexity

T- dark fruit notes of cherry and fig up front, followed by complimenting notes of both nutmeg and allspice. Mid-palate brings out sweet malty notes of caramel, molasses and brown sugar. Barrel notes emerge as it warms, adding another layer of complexity; bold peppery oak, bourbon and a hint of vanilla and chocolate. The finish gives more dark fruits, bourbon and spice. Long linger of spice and dark fruits

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel that turns velvety into a silky, warming finish

O- a worthy addition to the Fremont BA series, outstanding.

Dark brown body, light brown head. This is exactly as expected: big fremont rustic barrel with powerful baking spices that are not overdone, supported by toasty caramel, molasses, slightly roasted malt with hints of dark chocolate and dried dark fruit. Smell more focused on spices and booze, less complex but pleasing. Feel is textured by both the spices and malt, warming the palate with a sneaky complexity. The winterwarmer gets the strong ale treatment and I am here for it! Perfect for the Christmas time

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing opaque in the glass with a one finger dark khaki head with great retention and solid lacing. Aroma of lightly toasted malt, allspice, woody oak, bourbon and a hint of coffee. Flavor is lightly toasted malt, bourbon, allspice, nutmeg, mild coffee and chocolate. Spicy finish. Medium bodied with moderate creaminess; nice mouth feel. Seems I missed the season for this one, to my taste this is an ideal Christmas season big ale. The bbomb base is obvious and as appealing as always with good barrel character; in this case even more oaky goodness that its regular brethren. Spice is quite forward and there are clear nutmeg and the hoiday mixture provided by allspice. A little more chocolate and somewhat less dark fruit than regular bbomb. Mouth feel is creamy and luxurious. This is a stellar holiday strong ale. If this is a seasonal regular now, it will become my Christmas eve quaff. Delicious, if a bit spice forward.
