50cl keg from Divin Ostilia, Roma, Italy (€6):
Light, almost watery golden with a bit of froth for a head. Floral & slightly fruity with yeast & some background tart on the nose; some wheat, coriander & cloves follow. The taste was very similar with wheat, coriander, citrus & yeast making up most of the flavours then some sweetness at the end. It's a fresh & lively beer with strong carbonation but it was just too light, especially the nose.

Microbirrificio Opperbacco "Bianca Piperita"
330 ml. brown glass bottle, best by 9.16.15
5€ @ Baguetteria del Fico, Via della Fossa, 12 00186 Roma, Italy on 2 December 2015
Of all the beers that I sampled on my recent trip to Rome, the beers from Opperbacco stand out because they're interesting yet restrained. For this beer they've taken a Belgian-style witbier and added a measure of oats to the grain bill, some local honey, and a bit of peppermint to round out the coriander and orange peel. The oats give it an edge of smoothness, or perhaps 'wideness', in the mouth... lending a kind of silkiness to the palate. The honey gives, probably a touch of extra strength, a little bit of thinning to the malt, and a touch of flavor. But the peppermint is the "piece de resistance", not so bold in its strength that it allows the citrus and coriander notes to appear first, and then quickly takes the stage just past the middle and ushers you into a refreshing, almost cleansing, herbal and lightly acidic and spicy finish. Well worth seeking out!
