When Catherine the Great wanted this bold beer in the 18th century, the Empress went to the John Courage brewery in London. It is from this brewery and original recipe where Peter's Deptford Addiction received its inspiration to recreate one of the most famous of styles. The recipe used by 16 Mile has its pedigree back to the times of Catherine the Great and its creation pays homage to the great English brewers that literally made beer "fit for a Queen or a King."

On-tap at Mugs Alehouse, Brooklyn, NY

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a quarter finger high tan head that died down and left a collar around the edge of the glass and some lacing down the sides.
S: Moderate aromas of dark chocolate and dark malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of unsweetened dark dhocolate and dark malts and is rather bitter with some slight hints of char. The chocolate bitterness lingers through the finish.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer has very unique flavors of chocolaty bitterness that I've never experienced before in a Russian Imperial Stout.

16oz brown flip-top bottle from the brewery.

LOOK: Complete darkness, lovely tan frothing

SMELL: Dark chocolate, burnt currants, licorice, rose water, chocolate cordial, sweet

TASTE: Big and creamy, smooth, roasted grain, dried hay, dark roast coffee, carob, semi-sweet, modest hop bitterness, more roasted grain, dark bread, brown sugar, roasty finish

A really drinkable for such a big brew, tasty through and through ... with each sip comes another layer of complexity that unfolds. 16 Mile needs to keep beers like this coming.
