Appearance – Half finger head on an orange-brown clear body.

Aroma – Berries, caramel, a little buttery. Mostly caramel though.

Taste – Caramel, toffee, light hoppiness, and a little diacetyl but not out of place.

Mouthfeel – Nice easy drinking, goes down smooth.

Overall – A good beer, not spectacular but full-flavored and well rounded.

Please note that I am grading this beer TO THE STYLE. I have graded some very good IPAs with lower grades because I felt that they were not as close to the ideal of the style as they could have been. But as a pale ale this one was very good indeed.

12 oz bottle into a wine glass.

Appearance: Pours a dark copper color. The head is two fingers high and off-white in shade. Retention is quite good, as is the texture. A consistent ring of lacing is left on the glass. (3.75)

Smell: Very much like an English-style pale ale or *shudder* an ESB. The healthy malt backbone comes through immediately, with notes of toffee, caramel, and earth. I do pick up some citrusy hops (and thanks to the English bend, some marmalade), but by no means are the hops the star of the show. (3)

Taste: Just like the nose suggested, the malts are the star of the show - it's closer to an amber ale than a pale ale. Actually, given how malty it is (and how much I like this style of malts), it's pulled off quite well: the caramel, toffee, and nutty flavors are nicely defined. But where are the hops? Aside from the most gentle kiss of citrus on the forefront, they're really not there. (3)

Mouthfeel: The big malt backbone means this isn't hugely drinkable. Having said that, they don't obstruct the mouthfeel as much as they could have, so I won't complain too much. It's just dry enough to feature respectable drinkability. (3)

Overall: I enjoyed this slightly more than I thought I would. It's a decent English-style pale ale. There's just nothing to remember it by. Come to think about it, I've all but forgotten about it already. (3)

3.04/5: It's better to be forgettable than be awful...right?
