Rochefort 6: our oldest beer

The story of today’s Rochefort beers began in 1950 with Rochefort 6, also known as the “Trappiste”.

Rochefort 6 is the lightest in the range and the ideal introduction to the rest of the Rochefort family.

Amber elegance

It is an amber beer, with a delicate white head.

It is best served between 12 and 14°C and is smooth and fruity, with a subtle blend of cereal and caramel.

Tradition and lightness of touch

The number 6 does not refer to the alcohol content; it comes from an old Belgian unit of measurement that expressed the density of the wort.

The flavours of this beer have been enjoyed for generations…

Brewed with water, malted barley, sugar, yeast, hops and spices

Copenhagen 4/2 2017. 33 cl bottle from Meny, Østerfælled Torv, Kbh. Ø. Simple off-white label signalling that this is a no-nonsense Belgian monkish brew with a healthy ABV. Little red dot with a “6”.

Pours hazy light brown with a small white head. Stable. Settles as a thin, patchy layer of foam unable to cover the surface of the beer. Moderate lacing.

Aroma is sweet and potent at the same time. Caramel, brown sugar, banana and a yeasty odor of humid basement. Prominent presence of alcohol. As it warms up it only gets more intense.

Strong carbonation. Slightly thick, soft yet very lively texture.

Flavor is medium sweet. Followed by a more moderate bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet with a light bitter undercurrent. Lingers for a while.

Fine sweet dark Belgian ale. Not overdoing the sweet thing but finding a subtle balance.

Pours an effervescent hazel/amber with one thumb of tight sand colored head. Nice head retention & lacing

S: Some bready notes & pears, figs. Taffy notes & a little green banana once warmed up. Stellar nose

T: Follows the nose, some brown sugar, a little bit of phenol presence & choke cherry, plus dryness up front. Plums, brown sugar, dryness, raisins & a little dark cherry, green banana & cloves as this beer warms up. Finishes dry with a little brown sugar, some choke cherry, figs & raisins/prunes, faint woody notes/mushrooms & banana taffy

MF: Medium body, slight carbonation

Drinks easy for the style & ABV. Glad to have tried this, but better Dubbels out there. Would drink again, but not one I'd hoard

An easy through-the-head pour from a 330ml bottle into a goblet released a fat finger of short lived beige creamy foam. A ring lasts; a brief cap shrinks to a film with sliding arches of lacing. The body is hazy dark mahogany/amber.

Boozy caramel greets the nose followed by baked stone fruits and roasted nuts. Bready malt and dark rye toast in the background with very faint floral/herbal hops and spice.

Bold semi-sweet taste, sugary caramel is still first with bready/toasted malt rising above the nuts and fruit. Low hop flavor with average bitterness at first. The fruit flavors rise up during the middle featuring baked plum, apple and raisin. The finish is long, slowly becoming semi-dry as sweet fruit flavors drop off with rising roasted nuts (hazel, pecan, almond) and above average bitterness. Caramel clings and lingers well on with spicy hop bitterness and booze.

Lasting carbonation and a medium-full feel, oily rich with warming alcohol. Very well balanced for being so big and boozy. For me this is a sipper that can be drunk quickly. Matches style guidelines, a certain revisit.

L: Excessive foam on murky brown.

S: Beery and bready, a hint of cinnamon and clove

T: Complex, dark, almost gravy like. Stone in the finish and malt. Some caramel in the mid palate.

F: too carbonated for me

O: obviously a very well made beer and a fine example of what it is. But I really don't like it. It's too dark, too strong and too fizzy.

Cloudy medium brown pour with off white head. Soft fruit and spice in the nose with roasted grain. Sweet. Cherries and light cocoa in the middle escorted out the back by lightly toasted chocolate malt. |2/1/2013

33 cl bottle into a snifter in Toulouse, FR.
Lovely dense foam on cloudy deep amber brew.
Nose is malty and bready, some neutral fruit notes, warm spices.
Taste is classic dubbel, dark stone fruit, spice like nutmeg, not too sweet, smooth texture, way low bitterness, dry finish.
Mouth is silky smoove, medium toward high carbonation.
Overall, a nice example of the style I would gladly drink again.

L: light tan head. Relatively thick but now “pillowy” and does not leave much lacing. Color of the body is an opaque dark amber.

S: warm. Spice forward with dark fruit. Cherry notes, crushed apple. Medicinal. Sweet malt.

T: fruity and bready - like chunks of dark fruit in a loaf of pumpernickel. Primarily sweet with some spices but there are notes of bitterness in the background. Coriander.

F: medium bodied. Slick feeling. Light carbonation. Dry finish. Warm.

O: certainly a mainstay of the style but not my favorite - although not bad either. Sweet forward more than spice.
