330 mL brown bottle poured into a pint glass.
A: deep brown with ruby hints, only a small amount of off-white foam, no real head.
S: interesting and complex--sweet, malty with hints of banana
T: much like the aroma, the taste of this was much more complex than I expected: the hint of banana in the nose is now materialized nicely in the flavours; lots of malty richness as well
M: smooth and rich, moderately heavy on the tongue and palette
D: amazingly and surprisingly drinkable, especially for an ale of this strength--would have this again without any reluctance!

Bottle-conditioned in a 275ml brown bottle presentation. BB 05 OCT 2007, served cool in a large Burgundy wine glass.
A: pours a dark chestnut brown colour with ruby hues, no sign of a beer head, and the carbonation is also pretty low--almost like poured straight from the cask~~
S: barley wine like aroma--very settled but huge maltiness, with touches of amber malts, (faintly) caramel, rum-soaked cherries, and a backbone of X'mas cake with its sticky fruity and spicy elements all rolled into one. A warming alc. touch hovers in the background. Compared with most other X'mas beers I've had this year, this one is by far the most understated, and the subtle aroma gives it a niche, IMO.
T: extremely smooth maltiness comes hand in hand with a bitter hop presence, gradually a slightly floral as well as berry-fruity flavour of hops and a touch of grated nutmeg develops... turning more mellow and soothing in the finish, with a lingering spicy bitterness and some fruity hoppy hints. The deep and settled hoppyness provides a good balancer to the otherwise malty overtone. Pretty solid~~
M&D: the texture is almost too smooth, as carbonation is next to non-exitent; compared with Hog's Back's "Wobble in a Bottle", which is this beer's close relative, I prefer this one, for it shows a mellower edge to the supposedly rough and huge malty entry. Alas, the lack of a lively body also hits me as being slightly static and not vertical. Not bad for a X'mas beer, but hardly an attractive one.

This is a Belgian Xmas beer in Union Jack clothing. The fruit is on the first sip and continues ioto plums and old sultana raisins. The yeastyness and the fruit esters show some belgium influence. The beer is clunky at times much like some US brewers attempts at Belgian Ales. I felt that the finish was forced and fairly uneventful. A different beer for the season from a UK producer,
