A 500ml bottle with a BB of May 2013. Picked up recently from a nearby off-licence. With the tag-line 'A Diamond Ale' and Union Jack labelling, there is no doubt that this was created for the Queen's Diamond jubilee last year. Described on the label as a stronger version of their TEA ale; brewed with Pearl barley and hopped with Fuggles.
Poured into a tulip pint glass. A coppery-amber hue with medium carbonation. Yields a smallish head of white foam that lasts for a minute or two before subsiding. Aroma of caramel malt with hints of earthy yeast, grain, malt sugar, faint grass/hay and stewed hops. Not terribly exciting.
Tastes of grainy caramel malt with a dry, earthy finish. Notes of malt sugar, mild caramel/toffee, stewed leaves, faint grass/hay, earthy yeast and a whisper of fruity aroma hops. A hint of wet cardboard and solvent in the background, followed by a leafy bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with pleasant carbonation and decent body. Slightly astringent, with an aftertaste of earthy yeast, stewed leaves, cardboard and weak caramel.
Dull and uninspired - not quite the ale with which to toast her Majesty. The aroma and flavour are simply run-of-the-mill, with some mild off-notes thrown in for good measure. Weak sauce. It's a one-off brew, but if you should chance across it then consider leaving it on the shelf.
