Poured from a growler into a shaker. A moderate pour produces about an inch of billowy, off-white head which sticks around for a bit. The beer is a medium dark reddish brown with light carbonation.
Bready malts on the nose and tongue. This beer has as much of a bread taste and aroma as any beer I've ever tried. It's quite distinct, and reminds me of a dark wheat bread or, at times, almost like a nutty banana bread. I also detect a little bit of pleasant funk that I detect in all this brewery's beers. Lingering but subdued earthy hop bitterness on the tongue with a creamy mouthfeel. Overall, the beer is smooth and easy drinking yet complex enough to stay interesting.
They just tapped this yesterday, which I was very much looking forward to, as I had a growler or three of this last winter and really liked it. I consider it one of their best offerings, and truer to the style than most American brown ales out there, which can actually be real hop bombs.
Note: I added this beer, and could not find out the ABV, but I believe it's around 5 percent. I also characterized it as an American brown, but it may actually fit the profile of an English brown, since hops are de-emphasized.
