Poured from a growler into a shaker pint. A rather aggressive pour produce an inch or more of frothy, billowy, off-white head, which proves to be fairly sticky. The beer is a deep ruddy brown with fairly low carbonation.
Quite a bit of malty goodness in the nose and palate, with just a little bit of milk parlor funk. Despite the dark malts and ale yeast, the beer is rather clean tasting. Some lingering bitterness and maybe a slight bit of astringency on the tongue, but just a little. A little bit of smokiness is also detectable.
This a very easy drinking beer, but nothing here to really knock your socks off. Just a solid, easy drinking dark ale. I don't know how close it is to the style, but something worth a try. I paid 7 bucks for a half gallon, which is hard to beat. The ambience and good cheer of this brewery is also hard to top.
Update: I purchased another growler of this beer on Dec. 2, 2014. I believe this particular batch has a bit more residual sugar- it has a rather unique, almost cola-like flavor. If memory serves, this beer is very close to the style, perhaps more than last winter's. I've increased the overall score a bit.
