Poured from a growler into an 8 ounce sampling glass. A moderate pour produces about 1/2 inch of an off-white head, which quickly dissipates. Ample carbonation feeds little islets of foam. The carbonation lasts a good long time. The beer is a hazy golden.
There is an aroma to this beer that is hard to describe, but pretty much all of this brewery's beers have this smell/taste...sort of a pungent sourness, suggestive of the rich smell of a dairy barn, suggesting possibly some unique and/or local yeasts putting a unique stamp on the brew- much like Belgian beer. This sourness is also apparent in the full taste...It's perhaps a bit off-putting at first, but it grows on you. Also, a very full fruitiness and spiciness suggestive of banana, cherries, cloves, and maybe a bit of citrus. Maybe a bit of a rye taste? Not much of a hop taste or aroma except for some mild bitterness on the tongue.
I feel like the aforementioned unique flavors complement their seasonal brown ale better, which is really quite good.
This beer is not a typical lager beer, and is in fact unlike most beers I've ever tasted (except from this brewery). However, it's very drinkable, and I appreciate the uniqueness very much. I would highly recommend visiting this brewery anytime you're in Butte, Montana- such as the Montana Folk Fest, Evil Knievel Days, An Ri Ra, St. Paddy's etc. However, you should arrive with an open mind, and be prepared to sample something unique. They have a good variety of beers, and even some very tasty root beer. The ambience of the brewery is very family friendly- children are often seen playing games and drinking root beer in their own little area. (The drunks are limited in number, since by law you can only drink three pints on the premises). Another unique feature is that it's built on the Butte hill, so that when you enter on the north side, you descend seemingly into a cellar, but when you exit the south side, you encounter a guard railing and a 20 foot drop straight down to a parking lot.
