A 500ml bottle with a BB of Nov 2014. Picked up a while back from Sainsbury as part of the 2013 Beer Hunt. A new American IPA from Maxim - glad to see this brewery expanding their output.
A: Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A hazy orange-amber hue with tons of chunky floating sediment and medium carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a minute or two before collapsing to a patchy surface layer.
S: Aroma of fruity hops with hints of white grape, mild citrus, grass/hay, caramel malt, ale yeast and earthiness. Subdued but pleasant enough.
T: Tastes of fruity aromatic hops with a bitter finish. Notes of citrus, a touch of peel, white grape, faint melon, grass/hay, caramel malt, yeast esters, earthiness and mild stewed hops. Slightly sweet, followed by a restrained, hoppy bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with soft carbonation and good body. Somewhat astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of bitter aromatic hops, vague fruitiness, caramel malt and yeast esters.
O: Not too bad despite the bottle age. Doesn't look amazing - too much floating crud. Aroma and flavour are alright; white fruits and citrus with caramel malt underpinnings. Body is OK. Probably better fresh but drinkable enough. If they're still brewing it then worth sampling.

Copper to gold colour
Esters paramount in the bouquet
Unbalanced malt to hop ratio - too much malt for an IPA particularly one labelled as 'American'.
Light bitter dryness.
Underwhelmed. I won't be voting for this one in the Sainsbury's "Great British Beer Hunt"

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a pint glass - Sainsburys Great British Beer Hunt 2013.
Pours a copper colour with a white head.
Smells sweet and fruity.
Tastes pretty malty, disappointingly so. Sweet, caramel and bready malts dominate with some bittersweet fruity hops struggling to get in on the action.
Overall a drinkable pint but not really interesting enough to return to.
