This amazing place is a MUST visit when in Bucharest! One of the few places in Romania that brews and serves it's own beer.
A local tourist Map of Bucharest actually has it marked on the map, the street is opposite the Palatul CEC (Military Academy)on Calea Victoria not far from the Place December 1989. Taxi fares are cheap in Bucharest but check the fare structure on the Yellow Cab doors, there are some rip offs for tourists!
The interior is stunning, with wooden panels, carved spiral staircases to the balconies above, stained glass windows and lively atmosphere. Seating is upstairs and at ground level.
We had their own Pale draft beer, and it was really good - the closest to a real Munich style lager I have had in Bulgaria, and 0.4 litre was around $2.50. Smooth, tasty and not highly carbonated. Enjoyed it very much. A party of 4 ate here, with main course and sweet, and the food was excellent, with very good service from a friendly waiter who spoke some English and made us feel very welcome. The total bill for the 4 meals and 6 beers came to under $60, so very good value.
Highly recommended - but expect it to be very busy in the evenings, so best to get there before 7pm if you want to be sure of a table.
Local live music and dancers called in briefly to entertain the crowd only adding to the lively atmosphere.
Wish we could have visited a second night!

This is a must stop for anyone (beer lover or not!) traveling through Bucharest. It was recommended to me by a couple fellow travelers as well as the receptionist at our hostel. Chris (my travel buddy) and I (Wiseman Nick) ate and drank here each of our two nights in Bucharest. If you are in Bucharest right now, stop reading this review and go to Caru' Cu Bere! Onto the review:
Caru' Cu Bere is located in the Lipscani district of downtown Bucharest, an area known for it's traditional architecture. While the area seemed to survive the communist reign better than most of the city, much of what remains is in dire need of a face-lift. Caru' Cu Bere stands as one of the very few exceptions; the establishment is absolutely gorgeous, inside and out! We spotted the patio seating as soon as we turned onto Stavropoleos. Each night it was packed with happy customers and costumed waitresses. Inside was something entirely different. Polished wood seemed to coat every surface. Music, lively conversation, and fantastic aromas filled the air. Workers (all in traditional attire) bussed tables, filled mugs, played music, danced, and even sang! Chris and I couldn't help but smile.
Once seated (and we were seated immediately each night), we were presented with giant, newspaper-like menus. Being the wise man that I am, I went straight for the beer section. Sadly, they didn't have much to offer: Holsten, Tuborg, Carlsberg, Guinness, Kilkenny, and only a single house beer bearing the same name as the restaurant. With that said, Caru' Cu Bere (the beer) is one helluva lager! I ordered it both nights, and it paired beautifully with each of my dishes.
About those dishes: they were bomb, B O M B bomb. (A complete menu with descriptions and pictures is available on their website.) I ordered minced meat wrapped in cabbage leaves the first night, and a plate of mixed meat kabobs the second. All of the dishes are authentically Romanian and absolutely top-notch! If you're a first-timer, allow me to recommend Sărmălute Sevite cu Mămăliguţa as the main course, and Papanaşi for dessert.
The service was very quick and helpful each night. All of the employees we encountered spoke English. As an added bonus, you'll likely have a musician stroll by your table and play your party a tune. In our two nights, Chris and I saw these musicians playing violins, lutes, and even accordions.
Oh yeah, and it's Romania, so live it up - everything is affordable!
