The beer arrives from the tap with a dark, concentrated, amber color that shows only a touch of haze when held up to the light. It is topped by an amber tinged tan head that seems appropriate when poured from the growler. The nose smells fairly clean for a Quad, with toasted grain, caramel malt notes a fair amount of dark fruitiness and distinct Candi Syrup rum / butterscotch / molasses (though not really any of these things) notes.
The carbonation in this helps to balance the big up front sweetness a bit. Candi Syrup and caramel flavors play a dominant role in the flavor, but there is quite a bit of dark fruit and an underlying toasted malt / bread character here too. The spiciness, from the yeast, is quite a bit more muted than I was expecting. I know they actually used a Belgian yeast for this beer (a first for them, a Belgian beer brewed with Belgian Yeast, who ever heard of such a thing); some spiciness and character from the yeast really would have gone a long way towards making this great.
As with all the Thunder Canyon beers, the yeast character seems a bit clean, in most cases this is ok, but in a Quad you certainly want a fair amount of yeast influence. Also, as with most Quads, this beer really needs some age to cut the sweetness and bring out the inherent complexity; too bad that this is only a draft product as there is no chance to age this.

had on tap at Thunder Canyon Brewery. 10 oz pour
A-- Dark plum color, no carbonation, no head except a bit of off brown film. No Lacing as drank it.
S-- Spices, raisin, dark fruits and a lot of spice. ABV is hidden pretty well but on the tin side.
T-- Dark fruits, sweet rum taste. A lot of raisin. Think raisin bread. A bit of a medicinal taste in this.
M-- Medium carbonation. A little sweet and medicinal.
D-- Good to try once and that was it. Thought the ABV was at 9.7% but not sure. Got heavier as I drank onwards and was hard to finish.
