Dragonmead uses heather tips imported from Scotland to create this unusual brew. Its malty sweet aroma does not disappoint. Chocolate Malt imparts a great deal of the flavor of this beer but does not over-power the finish, which is defined by the powdery dryness of the heather. All in all, a malty brew with a very clean finish.

Delicious!!!! One of the best fruit beers I have had. Once again Dragonmead is above top notch along with being consistent quality that most breweries wish they could strive for!

On tap at The Hunt Club. A heather ale, yeah sure I'll try it. You can see the carbonation bubbles in it, and then a white creamy head tha leaves spider lace. Creamy mouthfeel, caramel malts. The aroma is malty. Good bitterness however in the taste, and not a bad beer.

This is a really good beer!! I've tried a few of the herbed gruit styles, and this one fits in nicely into that subset of beer. But note that the gruit styles have little to no hops in them, that's the style. (as an aside, to learn more about this style, great book: Sacred and Healing Beers by Steven Buhner)
Anyway, onto the review.
The color was amber-brown and cloudy. It had an off white, beige head color. VERY fluffy. Not perhaps as much aroma as I would prefer, but I detected the floral heather.
The taste was of heather up front, which I think is a nice flavor, it has a clean almost astringent taste. There follows just a touch of roasty malt. This is a very drinkable beer, in fact i had several of these.
Mouthfeel, very light like champagne. Truly an enjoyable experience.

I would have been hard pressed to guess this was a heather ale (leann fraoich) if blindfolded. Pours a medium amber in color with no head to speak of.
Nose is interesting, fresh smelling, herbal qualities but somehow thin smelling. Taste is very light with the same herbal tones as in the nose, the heather is very faint in the aftertaste, quite unlike other heather ales I've tried.
Overall a solid attempt by Dragonmead, but more miss than hit I'm afraid. Poor sod.

On tap at the brewery's pub. Described as a "Heather Ale".
This pint was a dark chestnut brown topped by a longlasting, cream coloured head. Fairly complex aroma, with toffee, sweet maltiness, and molasses mingling with a light spicy/floral character. Maltiness dominated the flavour, with some spice and medicinal character present. Very interesting. Medium/light body with a surprisingly clean finish. Definitely worth trying.
