Voodoo Bear Porter
Black Bear Brewery

Served in a pint glass. The appearance was a jet black color. Bar pour’s head yields no lacing. The smell had a robust chocolatey coffee aroma. The taste was pretty much the same. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a crisp sessionable aspect about it. Overall, not a bad porter at all, but hey, not a stellar one either.

 

Pint on draft at Mainely Brews in Waterville, Maine, where I understand this is aliased as "Post Office Porter."

Appearance: My beer pours of rich mahogany. It's a very dark brown with a nice frothy tan head. Looks like what I want a porter to look like.

Aroma: There's not a ton in the nose, but there's enough coffee there to be inviting.

Taste: Very nice flavor profile. Coffee, cocoa, some hop bite. A little slightly milky chocolate. Nice sweet/bitter combo.

Mouthfeel: Very easy on the palate. Super drinkable and smooth at 6+ ABV.

Overall: Very tasty porter. Second beer I've had from this brewery, and it's way better than their hefe. Would drink again.

 

 

Sampling a cellar temp bottle poured into a snifter. This bottle has been in my cellar for a few years. Hope it has held up ok.
The beer pours a rich cola brown color with very minimal beige head foaming up and receding quickly to a thin edge layer. The aroma is some roasted malt and a bit of chocolate. Fairly mild nose, but there is a bit of molasses too. First sip reveals an average body with very gentle carbonation. Texture is smooth and silky and leaves a smooth coating across my palate.
The flavor is sweet malt with chocolate and brown sugar with a bit of roasted malt that comes through on the finish.
No booze or hops anywhere to be found and the beer is easy to drink. Not overly complex but certainly not flawed either. I wonder if it was better when fresh. COuld be a decent porter but not incredible.

 

 

 

Poured on-tap at the brewery, the beer was served in a tumbler pint. It pours a brown color with ruby highlights and a tan, clingy head. Nose of roast and chocolate, with a bitter undertone. Flavors of bitter coffee first, with dark/baker's chocolate in the backbone. Charred highlights, with a bitter roast in the aftertaste. Thin bodied, with a filmy, bitter, lingering finish.

A- not quite black but almost. lightens up a bit when held up towards a light. nice looking offwhite frothy head. lacing coats the glass.

S- a bit of chocolate, no real strong scent overpowers any others.some sweetness to it, and some smoke.

T- on the lighter side. A little bit of the chocolate comes out in the taste. Kind of smokey but again mostly mild.

M- pretty thin on the porter side. leaves a great coating on the mouth.

D- I'll have to ask the what the ABV is next time I'm by the brewery. In my books if it isn't a session porter it must be damn close. It has the taste and lightness to put back a few.

Off the tap this beer was a dark reddish-brown color with a thin tan head. The retention as a skim was decent but the lacing only spotty. The aroma was of roasted malt and coffee. The flavors were ok, but like the aroma, simple. Roasted malt, coffee and a very bitter finish. Acidic and lacking sweetness and balance. The mouthfeel was semi-oily and slick, the body was medium/full and the carbonation a touch too high for the style. Forgettable.

Explosive out of the bottle as foam pours out on my kitchen counter as I pop the cap of this bomber. It could be because I stored it on it's side in my fridge.
Attractive beer with a tight 2 finger head that holds it's shape very well. Black in color with some dark brown around the edges.
Roasted malts, hints of coffee and a strange funk in the aroma. I believe underlying the the funk is a nice smelling beer but I just can't get past the strange funk.
Milk chocolate in the flavor with more hoppiness than usual for the style. TONS of carbonation and the mustiness I smelled in the aroma returns in the aftertaste.
Too much carbonation in the mouthfeel for it to be enjoyable.
I think Black Bear tried to go in a different direction with this beer and cheers to them for being creative. I also think with a small tweek here and a small tweek there this would be a very good beer. But as of right now it's a bit cock-eyed and I think I'll pass in the future.

Pours a dark brown with ruby hues when held up to the light, lots of foamy head with tons of lacing, took a while for the head to calm down.

Smell is mostly malty but it does have a slight hop aroma in the background.

Taste has a strong malty backbone, some bitterness similar to coffee, highly carbonated almost like a cola, it tastes better when letting it sit in the glass for a while otherwise the carbonation is a bit overwhelming.

A: The beer came in a the typical growler... It poured a dark brown almost black type of color.

S: The beer smelt just like any porter or stout. The evdience of coffee and chocolate was there, but not overbrearing.

T: The beer tasted like any old porter but pretty good. The thickness and hopes came out with a slight taste of chocolate and a little coffee.

M: The mouthfeel was the best part. it flowed nice in the mouth and made buying the growler completely worth it.

D: This is an interesting one because it is a little thicker then average, so to just sit there and drink it is not the easiest thing to do. But, if you are just sitting there chilling or being social, then you will be fine.

Poures a very dark black with a nice rich tan head. The head faded to leave a cloudy presence floating around the top of the beer. Smells of well balanced roasted coffee beans and dark fruity scents. Taste is creamy and rich with an excellent dry hop finish. Also get some pithy flavors in there as well. Flavors meld very well. Great drinkability, smooth, lacy, glides right off the tongue. Really look forward to trying other beers from this brewery!

22 oz bomber from Lou's in Augusta. Smells sweet and malty with hints of coffee. Black body with very little if any head to speak of... Tastes somewhat sweet with strong malt. Watery though. On the lighter side of medium bodied. Kind of reminds me of Black Fly Stout in some ways, but not nearly as good. Not the best porter I’ve had but its okay. Better on tap.

pours dark dark brown, near black. The white head doesn't stick around too long. Lots of coffee and some smoke in the nose, also malt, sweet. The taste is a little underwhelming, slightly smokey and malty, with coffee and chocolate in the background. Ligh effervescence, easy drinking, a little bitter on the finish.

Pours a deep dark brown. Rocky and quickly dissipating head. Lots o' lace. Smells roasty and sweet.

Flavor is a weak roastiness. Slightly unpleasant bitter finish like stale coffee. Flavor is thin and haphazard. Mouth is thin. Not alot to like here. Below average porter.
