This place is a little bit away from the main action in Hamburg and does not look much from the outside. Like Dr Who's tardis once inside there is a huge cavern. Very authentic and truly Germanic.
Small choice of beers but excellent quality and the food is wonderful - a perfect match for the beer. Having the buffet on the plank of wood for our table really added to the atmosphere.
I was not able to visit any other of the recommended places in Hamburg as I had pre-arranged conference meals. However as the other reviewers say this is a must see. The lack of beer choice really not an issue, great atmosphere and first class food. Will be first stop if I am back in Hamburg.

An absolute must stop when in Hamburg. Gorgeous cavernous underground brewpub with authentic German pilsner (made via decoction brewing - which is hardcore). The night I went it was the only beer available but it was such a revelation that it wasn't an issue. Service was pleasant and attentive, the food was as good as it gets for real German style meats etc. Not much else to add from what has already been mentioned previously, the Prototyp museum which isn't too far is a great place to go to beforehand (vintage German sports car museum).

Big, heavy oak doors open into the cellar-level of this Hamburg institution. Once in, the place is a long catacomb of stone and wood, stretching from front to back well over 200 feet.
The place has an utterly fantastic old-world feel. Big wood tables and benches mostly, except a few booths, which are fashioned from gigantic upturned wooden barrels. Service was accomodating, making the place seem even cozier and welcoming.
Only two beers on offer, which was disappointing, although those two beers were most excellent (a pils and a weizen).
Food was ridiculously authentic German stuff -- being vegetarian I opted for the sauerkraut, potatoes and a salad, but my omnivorous travel companion assured me the meaty fare was top-notch.
Go for the atmosphere and architecture, which are alone worth the trip to the southern end of the city. The beers are damn good, too.

Old style traditional German brew house. They have their famous (and delicious) pils vom fus, and a yummy fresh maibock for the seasonal. Great place to have that German meal you dream about. You can choose from a plate of brats, or roast beef or a fish plate or a mixed meat/cheese/veggie plate. They also have a great buffet with roasted meats and lots of salad choices for vegetarians. The buffet is staffed by friendly staff who make a plate to your order (I do not speak much/any German and they were helpful), weighing it after the addition of each yummy choice. I had the roast pork, some fried potatoes and mushrooms in gravy. My vegetarian friend had mozzarella salad, baked potato and corn salad.
The beer comes in three sizes: 200ml, 400ml or 10l mini-kegs (that is TEN LITERS, folks) for around 60 Euro. Big groups of locals were at the long tables and ordering the 10l mini-keg (which they tap mallet-style right at your table) along with huge family-style plates of sausage, veggies, cheese and fish.
Definitely worth a stop if you find yourself in Hamburg, and easy to get to on public transportation.

We were on a cruise that stopped in Hamburg, and since it came in at night we decided to go into the city and get some food. We asked the cab driver to take us to a good brewpub and dropped us off at Groninger. Even the outside looks cool, as the pub is in the basement of a building thats been around since the 1750's and is one of the few buildings that survived the bombing raids of WW2. The inside is really neat, random paintings on the walls, a deli and some large brew kettles. It is also enormous (took me like 5 minutes to get to the bathroom.) We ordered some beers and got back a really tasty looking amber ale, very good and thirst quenching. And we got a platter of sausages, potatoes, etc. served on a PIECE OF WOOD. The food was amazing, the beer was amazing, and if you are ever in Hamburg I really recommend this place.
