08 Solstice Release, 8.25% ABV

Pours brown with a finger thick off white head.

Smell: Smoked malts, like bbq or camping in a glass. A bit of sweetness behind that.

Taste: Smoked malts, some Chocolate and Crystal Malts. A touch of sourness that I don't think was in my last bottle.

If it wasn't for the out of place sourness, this would be great. The smoke isn't too up front and is pretty pleasant.

On tap at the Kuhnhenn Brew Pub...

Poured a medium and clear brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas some smoked meats, peat, and chocolate. Tastes of the same smoked meats, chocolate, and nutty. Smoke was there but not overpowering and on the lighter side.

Auburn berrish in color, with shy laced head, some good carbonation.

Smell is of jam like, probably strawberries, with deep malt flavours and malterised one... a bit too old maybe.

taste is Smokey of course, at first I wasn't able to perceived at first, some meaty flavours came out from the big, very round and full.

First of all, do yourself a favor and drink this closer to room temperatures, at the pub they serve it so cold you hardly get a glimmer of the full potential.

Pours a deep brown with ruby tones, crystal clear with noted carbonation. Had a lackluster head that fades very quickly. Aroma is of smoked malts, slightly sweet. Taste is very nice, thick on the malt, smoked hickory and charcoal to begin with and that hangs on the palate long after swallowing. Finish is slightly sweet with a viscous mouthfeel. Quite drinkable and an interesting experiment in cross-pollination of two good and venerable styles of beer.

On tap at the source. This brew is like a blend of the rauchbier and bock styles, and even though both are great, the combination of the two had only fair results. Poured out to a brownish auburn color with a short lived head. Medium low level of carbonation. No lace. Aroma is of smoked malts and some herbs, and sweet scented hops. The flavor was different to say the least; roasted malts, earth, raw veggies, some herbs and a sweet finish kept the palate busy and intrigued. Somehow, even though all the flavors were good, together they didn't mesh all that well. The mouthfeel was medium light bodied and slightly slick. Fair drinkability. I like the creativity, but perhaps this brew is still in the perfecting phase. Worth a try.

Had on tap at the brewery. Dark golden color, smelled faintly like smoke. This was my first smoke beer, so I can't really judge fairly. But I thought it was extremely good, especially the after-taste (smoky and smooth). This would have been perfect with sausage or venison.

I don't think I'll be able to find this in bottle anywhere, so from now I'll plan to try some authentic German versions (pretty easy to find in Ohio).

Deep orange/brown with a fine, off-white head. Malty aroma, a bit grainy with some smokiness and faint hops. Sweet caramel kicks off the flavour. Balanced smoke character leads into a lightly fruity finish. Mild carbonation with an off-dry, grainy texture. This is a very drinkable beer, quite balanced, with just the right amount of smokiness. Great stuff.
