750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled int 6/2019. Pours slightly hazy deep ruby red/orange/copper color with a 1 finger fairly dense and flufy cream colored head with solid retention, that reduces to a thin spotty lace cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big caramel, honey, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, whiskey, coconut, toasted oak, raisin, plum, fig, date, peach, pear, apricot, melon, red apple, red grape, biscuit, and brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of peppercorn, clove, banana, bubblegum, cocoa, roast, oak char, herbal, grass, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Minimal booze in the aromas as it warms. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready/light roasted malts, honey, fruity/spicy yeast, whiskey barrels, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with big strength. Taste of big caramel, honey, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, whiskey, coconut, toasted oak, raisin, plum, fig, date, peach, pear, apricot, melon, red apple, red grape, biscuit, and brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of peppercorn, clove, banana, bubblegum, cocoa, roast, oak char, herbal, grass, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal, grassy, roasted bitterness; and yeast, whiskey, oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, honey, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, whiskey, coconut, toasted oak, dark fruit, peach, pear, apricot, melon, red apple, red grape, biscuit, brown bread/crust, peppercorn, clove, banana, bubblegum, cocoa, roast, oak char, herbal, grass, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/light roasted malts, honey, fruity/spicy yeast, whiskey barrels, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with an awesome malt/hop/roast bitter/sweet, and whiskey/oak spiciness balance; with no cloying, acrid, astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering hop/char bitterness and spicy/oak tannins after the finish. Medium-plus carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy, fairly sticky/chalky/tannic, and lightly slick mouthfeel that is great. Mild increasing warmth of 9.25%, with minimal lingering barrel booze after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic barrel aged Biere de Garde. All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/light roasted malts, honey, fruity/spicy yeast, whiskey barrels, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV; with the mellowly bitter/spicy/tannic/drying finish. Fantastic balance of rich malts, honey, fruity/spicy yeast, and whiskey barrel presence/integration; with solid earthy hops. Light residual sweetness with lingering dryness. Not overly sweet/heavy for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on style example as expected. Not overwhelming on any aspect.
