64oz growler, filled at the brewpub dec 22/09, sampled jan 1/2010.
the menu listed it as 9% ABV and describes it as a "belgian triple infused with caramel and golden delicious apples".
pours hazy deep dark orange, showing more ruby red at the widest part of the glass. the thin layer of very fine white head quickly disappears, leaving only a few bubbles around the edges of the glass and a few spots of lace.
aroma is wacky. boozy. caramel and apples are definitely there. multi-grain and rye bread. bit of biscuit and cracker. touch of sourness. earthy. some date and dark fruit.
taste is neat. slightly boozy alcohol. tart and slightly sour apple, more like a granny smith than a golden delicious. dark fruit - date and raisin mostly. caramel. toffee and butterscotch. tastes more like a dubbel or a strong dark, but i guess that's what you'd get if you dump a whack of caramel into a tripel. medium-low bitterness level.
mouthfeel is nice. medium-light body with a fairly dry finish. low carbonation level hurts it a little, which could be due to the growler not being quite as full as usual or perhaps not sealing completely, so i won't penalize it for that.
drinkability is nice. a touch boozy, but i don't mind it. the caramel and apple work pretty well without coming across as artificial or as acetaldehyde. a bit more carbonation and a bit less alcohol presence and this one would be a winner.

Big thanks to grub for lugging this growler back from MI.
Pours a cloudy and ruddy reddish brown, very thin off white head forms, settles down to a thin ring, some lace spots stick to the glass.
Smell is wacky, boozy, caramel, Granny Smith apple tartness, raisin, brown sugar, iron, bready through the middle, very weird.
Taste is weird too, very sweet up front, caramel and brown sugar, and then tart like an apple, buttery, bread, toffee, lightly fruity, some raisin and booze, weird mix of flavours and that tartness really sticks.
Mouthfeel is thin, light bodied with low carbonation. A pretty strange one, and glass of it was enough for me. I did like how the GR apples came through like GR apples. Thanks Russ!

Growler brought courtesy of Grub - thanks Russ, it's always nice to get to try some of these rarer one-offs, especially from Kuhnhenn!
Grub tells us Kuhnhenn lists this as a tripel infused with caramel and Golden Delicious apples - sounds interesting!
After wrestling with the growler to open it, it pours an amber/caramel color with light head, could be from growler transport, slightly cloudy.
Nose is wild and wacky. Heavy caramel and vanilla that initially reminds me of Southern Tier's Creme Brulee, a bit of tart apple in there, then a bit of sweaty funk as it opens up and a hint of copper pennies. Not sure if I like it or not but it's certainly unusual.
The caramel again provides the first impression but it is closely followed by a juicy apple note which is tart and reminds me exactly of biting into a Golden Delicious, perhaps a bit of apple peel in there as well. A bit of bread and toffee malt in there that hints at something more like a dubbel. Both sweet and tart - what is this beer? Bit of booze in there too but for a Kuhnhenn beer I find it relatively restrained.
Pretty thin body and a slightly lower carb than I would go for seem to hinder the drinkability along with the wild flavor profile.
It's certainly an odd duck and while it's nowhere near bad it just messes with your tongue - not sure if I could drink alot of this and most of us didn't go back for seconds. Not alot of the tripel coming through on this one, obscured by the caramel and tart apple. Thanks again Russ for bringing this one, this will stand out in my mind for a while!
