This ale has an intense malty character and aroma, that meld into the cacao and rich caramel, playing off the warmth of the alcohol.

A really odd bird. The first bottle seemed like a heinous mess, with a Belgian yeast funk vibe behind the chocolate and caramel. Second bottle after a few months on a shelf dialed back the funk, showing more of the pleasant chocolate caramel candy treat. Probably not one I would revisit beyond the tick.

Turbid dark brown body, tan cap. Smells like a diabetic nightmare... Tastes just like it too: chocolate, covered gooey, caramel explosion with booze and malt with a hit of tootsie roll! Barley is barely there. Smooth malt body with a semblance of barley, but it does not temper the growing sweetness of each sip. I love barleywine but I really struggle to get into full fledged pastrywine because the sweetness just dominates

poured from a green foil-topped 12oz bottle (vintage 2022) into a perennial snifter. pours a puddle water brown with virtually no head but there appears to be some floaties (think coconut beers) on top. aromas of bourbon and oak collide with massive dark fruits as well caramel and light chocolate. it would be a really inviting nose if there wasn’t hints of tart raspberry in the background. on the taste i get less fruit and more bourbon, chocolate and caramel. full mouthfeel. nothing to complain about in that department. this is quite the odd one. i have mad respect for kuhnhenn and while this isn’t terrible it’s also far from great. hey, you win some you lose some.

This 2022 bottle pours a very murky, blood-red tinted dark brown with a minuscule tan head that instantly rocket fizzes away to nothing. Small tan floaters bob along the surface.
The aroma isn’t particularly pleasant. It’s old caramel, old chocolate, and gives an almost spoiled impression. There’s a pretty strong nuttiness to the smell, too.
The taste is dominated by old caramel and chocolate with maybe some orange behind. The caramel sweetness is pretty intense, and not particularly pleasant. The nuttiness isn’t as strong as in the nose, but there’s definitely some walnut in there, too; again, tasting a bit past the expiration date. There’s some grape jelly blended in with the caramel, as well.
The mouthfeel is oily with soft carbonation and comes across slick and pretty thin.
Reminds me of some Cadbury egg that you find a year or three after they were hidden blended into a glass of water with a square of chocolate orange and heaping tablespoon of Welch’s. Not recommended.

2022 bottle poured at fridge temp. Pours black with zero head. The nose is really nice and intense. Bourbon comes across immediately, suggesting a relatively high ABV on this one. It's a mystery! Tons of chocolate, caramel, and vanilla. Lovely nose.
The taste is...interesting. Not sure if I'm really into it, but the chocolate is heavy. Seems like a great compliment for a stout, but on a barleywine this seems odd. Some vanilla and tons of salted caramel. Maple syrup, and a strong cough medicine note. It's OK.

2022 vintage
And more random Kuhnhenn beers appear on Tavour. This one sounds interesting since it’s not what you usually see from them, though they did have that cake 4D variant recently. That worked out surprisingly well so I’m not really concerned with this one maybe being too sweet. Let’s dive right in
Pours an opaque medium brown with just a thin ring of tan bubbles that quickly fades to nothing and leaves no lacing
It’s definitely sweet in the nose but it never becomes cloying. I’m picking up on aromas of chocolate fudge, burnt caramel, sweet bourbon, molasses, brown sugar, toasted walnut, red grape, toasted oak, and vanilla bean
Surprisingly it’s even less sweet in taste, the fruit notes are dialed up and it makes for a great balance. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting raisin, burnt caramel, smooth oak, sweet honey, whiskey, brown sugar, red grape, toasted walnut, vanilla bean, and milk chocolate. The swallow brings notes of raisin, black cherry, chocolate fudge, toasted walnut, smooth oak, vanilla bean, fruity coffee, burnt caramel, dates, sweet bourbon, and light red wine
A medium full body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a smooth beer. Finishes mostly dry with a mild boozy heat
This is better than I expected it to be. The adjuncts are present but perfectly restrained at the same time
