On tap at the Michigan Brewer's Guild Summer Festival 2011. Tasted along side nearly all of the other fruited versions.
Appearance
Not all of the fruits that Kuhnhenn added to Play in the Hay had drastic effects on the appearance. Mango, however, did. It turned the standard, hazy straw colored beer into a hazed ruby red. There was a loose head that didn't seem to last long.
Aroma
This was a simply incredible smelling beer. Even amongst the sweaty people, humid air and creek water this beer's bouquet stood out with gusto. It is simply packed to the brim with incredibly fresh smelling tropical exotica. The mango's sweetness is kept in check by Play in the Hay's inherent grassy, bretty funk. This was truly one of the fest's main spectacles.
Taste
Keeping close with the aroma, the taste is loaded with tropical fruit goodness. The mangos are very strong, but they know when to stop. They don't overpower the heavy brett influence. There isn't much tartness to this beer. Its mostly a nice, grassy dryness. It finishes with a great flash of juciness, like biting into a mango, just before a long, crisp, bretty dryness. Wow.
Mouthfeel
This really isn't a sour, its what I like to call a funky. Plenty of bretty dryness is leveled out by a pocket of mango and tropical juiciness in the core.
Overall
One of our favorites of the entire fest. It was a very memorable beer and one I am glad I tried and one that reminds me why I spend so much time at the Kuhnhenn booth every summer.
